Bandito Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 Sounds like a drive shaft fault to me, not so much a gearbox fault. Quote
sepulchrave Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 SOMETHING EXPENSIVE HAS BROKEN, YOU NEED A VW SPECIALIST QUICK! :) (Please don't shout, it's considered rude.) We won't be able to fix this for you, it sounds like one of the driveshafts has failed (CV joint probably). Get under the car and give 'em a shake. If it rattles it's shot. Quote
kwakzx62003 Posted November 6, 2006 Author Report Posted November 6, 2006 THANKS FOR THE QUICK REPLIES I HAVE JUST BEEN OUT TO MY GARAGE AND GIVEN THE DRIVE SHAFTS A SHAKE AND THEY SEEM FINE THEY HAVE NO PLAY WHAT SO EVER. THANKS FOR INFO IT WAS WORTH A TRY. MANY THANKS ADRIAN Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 not so loud :) let us know how u get on Quote
tim-spam Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 If you're brave, you could get someone to try driving backwards whilst you look under the car (from the front - don't risk getting run over if something grabs) to watch the driveshafts - if an outer CV joint has failed, you may see one of the driveshafts turning, or one of the output flanges turning if it's an inner CV joint that's failed. Dave-G Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 If it wont even get into gear it sounds clutch or gearbox shaft related to me  Quote
Wasphouse Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 Symptoms match mine exactly - I'll let you know what I find tomorrow. Good luck with yours. Quote
Sharanfx Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 To be safe jack the front up and put it on axle stands then stick it in reverse. You can then stick your head under and have a good look. Quote
Dave-G Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 IIRC, the wheels are not supposed to be driven when fully 'suspended'... ? Quote
tim-spam Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 IIRC, the wheels are not supposed to be driven when fully 'suspended'... ?Why not? Quote
Dave-G Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 I seem to recall that this places the cv joints at angle that strains them... ? Please understand that I am only saying I think this is the case rather than it being a defininitve no-no Quote
tim-spam Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 The CV joints will have been designed to work safely and correctly over the full range of suspension travel and steering lock, so there should be no problem there. However, regularly accelerating hard at or near to full lock will greatly shorten the life of the outer CV joints, as their torque capacity reduces as the lock angle increases. Quote
tim-spam Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 By the way, if you need a new driveshaft or CV joint, try GSF, as they are likely to be considerably cheaper than the main agents. Quote
Sharanfx Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 IIRC, the wheels are not supposed to be driven when fully 'suspended'... ? Place the axle stands on the wishbones then so the wheels stay level. Its not as if your going to run it for long periods of time, It sounds like its not going to drive anyway. Quote

We were happily driving along with the cruise on at 60mph. Next minute the grinding noise you described and we slowly ground to a halt. Fortuntely managed to pull into a lay-by otherwise it would have been pretty hairy. The RAC guy checked a few things but couldn't find the fault so they recovered us home. Sent the car off to the local Ford garage today who diagnosed a failed offside driveshaft and associated bits. Apparently the end of the driveshaft has worn down where it meshes in with the gearbox. End result = a wallet that is Quote
NikpV Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 how many miles had it done - if its less than 60k you may get some joy out of ford since it can only just be out of warranty :( Quote
buford_t_justice Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 how many miles had it done - if its less than 60k you may get some joy out of ford since it can only just be out of warranty :( Mileage is 55k and only 3 weeks out of warranty! TBH I can't be bothered wasting my time with Ford. It took me long enough last time to get some money out of them for the alloys and the thought of starting on them again for this doesn't bear thinking about. From now on I will be taking the path of least resistance!! Quote
Wasphouse Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 Hmmmm... Just like buses - none - then three come along all at once!! Seem to be a lot of these failures all of a sudden! Oh well :D Quote
