Guest rambo Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 hi all, had my gal a few months now and when i first brought it i done an oil change, since then i have done about 2,000 miles, checked the oil today and it was on the min mark, (GUTTED) had a quick look under it tonight could not see much as was too dark will have a good look in the morning, all i could see was oil on the drivers side behind the wheel on the triangle looking casing, cant remember the name for this at the mo, just wondered if anyone knew where it is coming from, with my limited description, i.e. is it a common fault on these ? car has covered 93,000 miles will post back when i have had a good look cheers ;) Quote
davey1825 Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 Hi, I have a 2.0 Gal, 124k I have to add oil every 1100 miles or so, about half a litre or so, dosn't seem to have any leaks (Touch Wood!!!) so can only assume it gets burnt, the 2 litre engine does have to work quite hard to pull the such a car as the Galaxy (Hence probably why they introduced the 2.3 after a few years). As for the patch of oil that you have found, can you elaborate any more on your triangle casing??? Daves Quote
Guest rambo Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 thanx for the help davey did i actually say casing, well it aint a casing at all DOH ! but it is triangular in shape, i should know the name of this but i just cannot remember ?i know mondeos have them as a friend once had his changed apparently they go quite often, there is one on each side of the car at the front only, to do with the suspension, this is driving me nuts i will post a pic tomorrow, as soon as someone says it i will know it i will run the engine later on this morning and climb underneath see whats ocurring if anything, as you say they do like a drop of oil, not used to it as my previous car the mondeo i changed the oil once a year and never topped it up in between what oil do you use (grade) as i put in magnetec 5w 30 same as i used in my mondeo as it had 16 valvesi thought the gal had 16 valves as well but i think it is only an 8v ? maybe 10w 40 then ? what is your mpg figure around town, and motorway ??? cheers :D Quote
redneck01246 Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 from your description sounds like lower arm(wishbone) :D Quote
wood73 Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 are you sure it is oil on the wishbone and not grease? because this indicates a split c.v. gaitor.your oil consumption does seem a little excessive, try checking the rocker gasket as this is usually the first thing to leak oil on any car. davey1825 Posted November 5, 2006 Report Posted November 5, 2006 hi, i get about 28 to the gallon round town, and about 43 on Motorway (i think!!), i use semi synthetic 5W 30 in my car andit seems ok Daves Quote
jkspoff Posted November 5, 2006 Report Posted November 5, 2006 I generally don't need to add any oil between services, the dip stick at worst is half way between min and max. Don't forget that the recommended dip stick markings only need to be between these marks, and if its on the min mark it doesn't mean the engine is running low on oil, only that there isn't much reserve remaining. The oil pressure remains about the same, but it is obviously better to keep it just below the max mark. My remapped ecu engine does between 35 and 50mpg, depending on style of driving/roads.Regular DIY proper 505.01 complete oil changes is the key to a long life/better fuel economy and quiet engine. Guest rambo Posted November 5, 2006 Report Posted November 5, 2006 wow davey that is serious mpg you are getting from your car mine does about 22 around town and 28 on the motorway, either your wrong as you said ( i think) or i must have a hole in my petrol tank my car is defo leaking oil as it is on the bottom of the drivers side wishbone, where it must be leaking down onto it from above but where i dont know ? wiped my finger on it and it is fresh oil that is on, the wishbone :( Quote

The double seal blew and oil everywhere! But I'm sure you wouldn't have done this! ;-) Quote
Guest rambo Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 i would not have left the old oil seal on the filter, or did i, now you mention it you have me wondering mmmmmmmm its defo got excessive oil consumption though, will have to take a good look this coming weekend did not get a chance this weekend (if only i had a ramp) i miss my mondy  Quote
davey1825 Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 hi rambo here is my latest MPG from Quote
Guest rambo Posted November 9, 2006 Report Posted November 9, 2006 hi davey, still aint got under the gal to have a look at that oil leak i will defo do it this weekend when i change the fuel filter, i am liking your new mpg figures, that sounds more like it, you had me well worried when you said you got 42 mpg, all i know is i get 360 miles to Quote
davey1825 Posted November 9, 2006 Report Posted November 9, 2006 i know what you mean the 2.0 isn't going to win any 0-60 contests, but it's not too bad to be fair, i'm pleased with mine and set out to buy a 2.0 as it was the only engine size that i could afford to run!!!!. Ford only put the 2.0 engine in the gal for about 2 years and decided it was not big enough hence why they introduced the 2.3 in '98. But i haven't driven a 2.3 so don't have any idea how they are to drive or how much more powerful it feels either. Best Regards Daves i know what you mean the 2.0 isn't going to win any 0-60 contests, but it's not too bad to be fair, i'm pleased with mine and set out to buy a 2.0 as it was the only engine size that i could afford to run!!!!. Guest rambo Posted November 12, 2006 Report Posted November 12, 2006 managed to get some time to look under my gal at that leak today, and it is power steering fluid that is leaking not engine oil, must be from somewhere along the rack drivers side directly above the drivers side wishbone, could not see exactly where it was coming from, i think the wishbone is in the way ! when i undone the front wheel to get a closer look on loosening the front wheel nuts, there seemed to be excessive movement of the wheel (forwards and backwards), i suppose that means the wishbone rubbers are perished, i am sure there should be some movement there but how much, i dont know ? anyone know how much they are to change, and is it a D.I.Y. JOBBY OR GARAGE ? also wondered if it was possible to just re-new the bushes, but knowing fraud i bet you have to buy the arms and bushes complete cheers all davey the 2,3 version would be 25% more powerful than the 2.0 and drink the same in petrol, i wanted a 2.3 but my car was so clean i just ended up getting it anyways ha ha !
