My V6 is getting noisy and burning oil - I think an engine swap is due???. Do any of you have any suggestions/advise about buying a used one from the scrappy, re-conditioned exchanges, or a rebuild.

I've always beleived in rebuild what you've got. You know the history etc unless of course it has an undesireable history :-)

I'd agree with Johnb80 here, assuming you know that the rest of your engine is OK it's better to get it refurbished.

Ahhhh well, I only know the cars history for about the last 9 months (it's a 97). It has no service history. I would have no confidence in the motor.

Thanx fred - thats a very useful link. The firm seem very good - do you have any experience of business with them? - i.e. can you recommend them?.

Hi

Just for your info, I have just had my 97 Tdi pampered with a new engine and it roughly came in at 4500 Euros. Mind you that was for a new clutch and belts etc as well as the complete new block, pistons etc. I was a bit shocked when handed the bill but there again I have a 97 car that will hopefully go on for another 10 years. I had already purchased a new diesel injector pump for 3000 odd Euros last year so that got put on too. In fact thinking about it I probably could have bought a new car by now!!!

Anyway personally I had the choice of recon or new and for a 500 euro difference I went for the new to make sure I had all the garuntees for 2 years.
