HeadlessChicken Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 Hi All, I've bought a 53 1.9TDi 130 Galaxy that's done 55K and am planning to keep it sometime. It needs oil. Local Ford Dealer has just supplied a top-up bottle of "Ford Formula E 5W-30", WSS-M2C913-B. API SL. ILSAC GF-3. ACEA A1/B1, Quote
chromedome Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 The oil for a TDI PD Engine should be to VW Spec 505.01. Quote
HeadlessChicken Posted October 30, 2006 Author Report Posted October 30, 2006 Does anyone know how this Ford oil compares to the VW specs ? Quote
Guest sarah Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 Does anyone know how this Ford oil compares to the VW specs ? The best thing to do is go to german and swidish or eurocar parts they normaly sell vw pd oil a lot cheaper then dealers Quote
mumof4 Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 Tip for search..if you are searching for oil or MAF....please remember to put a full stop after the word..like oil.MAF. Then it will search for you. ;) Quote
NikpV Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 just go back and swap it for formula sd oil = needs to be 505.01 vw spec - its a vw engine after all Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 go halfords,,, and get the vw spec 505.01 - for PD engines. it only comes in 1 litre bottles. MJR Quote
seatkid Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 They sold you the wrong oil! The "E" range Ford oil is "value" (cheap) oil, and is definitely not suitable for your PD diesel engine which requires VW505.01 spec oil. (Beware that someone doesnt sell you VW 505.00 oil - that's another totally unsuitable oil!) The PD engine is probably the most fussy engine in the world when it comes to oil. Use the wrong oil and you risk rapidly worn camshaft/PD injectors. AFAIK the only Ford oil suitable for your PD is the Formula SD 5W-40. Go to VW/Audi/Skoda dealer and pick up Quantum PD oil instead. Remember look for 505.01 on the can! Quote
tim-spam Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 go halfords,,, and get the vw spec 505.01 - for PD engines. it only comes in 1 litre bottles. MJRHalfords sell Castrol Edge 5W40 to 505.01 in 1 litre and 4 litre bottles (around Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 is the 4 litre a new thing? haven't seen them before MJR Quote
NikpV Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 is the 4 litre a new thing? haven't seen them before MJRan irritating size since you need 4.5l for an oil change I'm sure formula SD is not Quote
Dave-G Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 If you have a millers oil outlet near you, their XFE-PD is the right stuff to 505.01, at about Quote

HeadlessChicken Posted October 31, 2006 Author Report Posted October 31, 2006 Thanks All, I've bought some 505.01 ! The offending dealer was M53 Ford in Birkenhead. I queried it with M53 Ford at Ellesmere Port, they said it's definitely the right one. I spoke to Peoples Ford @ Speke, they said don't put that oil in, it's wrong - Formula SD only. I think we all know who will and won't be servicing that car. Cheers. Quote
mumof4 Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 headless..whereabouts you located, i used to live in Eastham. :P . Quote

Sher Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 This topic has been discussed before http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...ic=849&hl=SHELL Again Ford dealers are not upto scratch Quote
HeadlessChicken Posted November 2, 2006 Author Report Posted November 2, 2006 Congratulations Sher on getting something useful out of Ford I tried and got this "Thank you for your enquiry Please contact Ford Technical and they will assist you further with the Information that you require Ford Technical : 0906 55 33 447 Many Thanks Jade Mckelvie Ford Information Service 08457 111 888. " I sent them a mail saying I didn't see why I should pay a premium rate charge to discuss a mistake by one of their dealers - they should be paying me for the inconvenience. No response so far and I'm not holding my breath. Still that other post shows all I need to see, thanks. Quote
jkspoff Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 My local Ford dealer also had no idea that the Galaxy was supposed to use 505.01 spec oil, they looked at me as if I was daft, they told me they use the large drum of standard diesel oil in all their servicing of diesel vehicles of all type, YIKES.......... and that was the service manager.........YIKES YIKES ! They didn't even stock the correct oil in their parts department, it had to be ordered in specially. Glad I do all my own oil changes. Just how many people with expensive tdi Galaxy mk1 & 2s are going to be having premature engine failures. Quote
Guest HairyPlateEater Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 headless..whereabouts you located, i used to live in Eastham. . And I used to live in Wallasey (back up that way tomorrow!) .... Had problems with both of the M53 Ford dealerships when I had my Mondeo. The Birkenhead branch even suggested that I couldn't replace the batteries in my remote key fob, I had to get a new fob!!!! I went and bought the replacement batteries from a jewellers in Liscard and took it to the parts desk and changed them in front of them. Called them w*nkers and left. Steer clear! My local Ford dealer also had no idea that the Galaxy was supposed to use 505.01 spec oil, they looked at me as if I was daft, they told me they use the large drum of standard diesel oil in all their servicing of diesel vehicles of all type, YIKES.......... and that was the service manager.........YIKES YIKES ! They didn't even stock the correct oil in their parts department, it had to be ordered in specially. Glad I do all my own oil changes. Just how many people with expensive tdi Galaxy mk1 & 2s are going to be having premature engine failures. That's just scary!! Quote

Sher Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 This is aimed at HeadlessChicken but may be useful to others as well. http://www.saynoto0870.com/search.php The name of the page should say it all as 0870 numbers are higher than standard rates. You often get a freephone number or at the very least a Geographical one which can be phoned at normal rates. Using Skype whilst in Belgium, France or Spain it costs me a max of 1.2p/minute to connect in this way. I also have an 0161 *** **** number which rings in my Caravan or wherever I am logged on in Skype for I think its Quote
