i have had a seach on the site on starter motor problems, and it seem quite common. i have a problem with my starter on my 2.0l GLX mk1 gal.

i know what the problem is, the starter wont fire in every time, its spins fine as you can hear it, but it just dont want to fire out every time, when it does fire out, it starts fine.

now i have enquired about a new starter from my local motor factrs, and im told theres 3 typres of starter for my engine.

How can i tell what type i got??? or have i got to take the starter completly off???

cheers

how about cleaning up the bendix/spiral track and greasing it - may just be a bit sticky/dirty

Yeh I would suggest that to ... uses an old pre engaged type starter which throws the bendix toothed gear into the flywheel when you turn the ignition. Whats happening to yours is the toothed gear is sticking and not fully engaging the flywheel. Like Nik said, if you clean the spiral track the bendix gear it will run free. I wouldn't grease it though as this tends to attract all the crap and you end up in the same boat. Normally a light oil will do the trick. You will need to remove the starter to be able to access the gear and track.

Good luck
