Hi All,

me again.....

can anyone tell me where to locate the socket for the vag com lead

i am going to get a cheap fault finder from halfords and want to find the plug to determine the connector as i have asked before there is no-one in my area with a Vag com so will have to do it as cheaply as possible.

does anyone know where i can get the usual MPG for my model as our favoured haynes manual doesnt cover my model ....what a cop out its strange how this model is hated by all dealers why the bl**dy hell did they make it........

either behind the ash tray or in the shroud below the fusebox (by drivers right shin)

:D Think of a number :D ..... half it ...... :25: half it again ... and you'll be close lol

IIRC 2.8 gives about 20 around town and 26-28 tops on long steady speed runs. Need the number of a loan company for the fuel bills? :o

Thanks Nik you are a fountain of information

Cheers HPE you certainly know how to kick a man when he's down ha! ha!

have any of you ever tried the halfords fault finders and do they work as i am like most people dont have a lappy or vag com.

expect you'd need to find a long long long hill to get to 36mpg   :D

There are 2 sections to that ashtray if its a mk.1?

The ashtray lifts out but then the whole lid and bottom section lifts out as well.

Well on mine it does and its located there.

Well if its a VW engine then I'd opt for the VW Fault Finder.

It's basically VW anyway, just about.

cheers guys much appreciated

oh yeah i used FMS for parts they are really cheap and send it to you i posted this ages ago but they are worth giving a call in the future............

if you ever come across anyone in surrey with a vag com kit and doesnt mind sharing it for a day let us know

greatly appreciated

ended up taking it to a local VW specialist and he returned with the following can anyone understand what this means

Code:01165 Throttle Valve control unit J388:fault in basic setting

Code:00297 Gearbox Speed Sender-G38 No signal

Try resetting the throttle body, switch on the ignition but do not start the engine! you should hear the throttle body motor operating? it will go through it's range of movement and then revert back to it's rest position, job done, this can take a while! up to a couple of minutes in some cases, if this doesn't work dis the battery for ten minutes and reset the ECU back to it's basic set up

as for the gear box sensor? IIRC this is one of the sensors that will only give a signal if the engine/car is moving? as the sensor will not be getting a signal?

for some reason in drive 1st gear isnt selecting but if you put it in first its fine there could be a faulty sensor/problem with the selector or worse case knackered Gearbox

or some shaft thingy that attaches the engine to the gearbox thoug i cant see that as all the gears theoretically work although you miss 1st when in drive.

The throttle valve is electronic so it could also be a sensor which is why i posted,i was hoping soemone else may have a similar issue.or no this fault from using VagCom

it only cost me

when you say all other faults were sorted i am assuming that they cleared all codes took it for a long drive and only these two codes re-appeared???

it is a shame that they couldn't pinpoint the problem further but it is difficult as the throttle valve control unit is made up of several components and for

Thanks All much, appreciated,

the fault code reader in halfords wasnt worth it which is why i took it to the VW specialist the reader was made by er.......genson or something like that it was the only ODBii i could find and they wanted 139.99 for it considering it only beeped the code and cleared it it wasnt worth it so dont buy it

since the codes were cleared it feels like a different car bar the first gear issue its surprising how much it can change

the only other one is the maf sensor fault was an open circuit i have been told this means constantly open rather than electrical open circuit i assume the performance difference since the vag resest has sorted that...

anyone with knowledge of autoboxes please give me a shout

thanks again all

the maf code could have been logged if it has been disconnected at some point. you would notice a difference in performance if the maf wasn't doing its job properly.

you can buy a lead for 15.00 off some auction site and download the free version of vag-com. it won't do everything that the full version will do but it will read gearbox and engine codes.

apart from checking for fault codes, checking the fluid level and looking for any damaged wiring the autobox is probably best left to the experts.
