jackthehat.co.uk Posted October 28, 2006 Report Posted October 28, 2006 Hi, I have a 2002 Galaxy 1.9Tdi 115 with 6 speed manual gearbox.Changing up from 2nd into 3rd gear is quite notchy and gives a tiny little crunch each time. Changing down from 4th to 3rd is smooth as it should be. When I was under the car a couple of months ago I noticed some fluid around where the gearbox meets the engine. I was wondering if it has a leak and I would like to check the fluid level in the gearbox. Does anyone know the OFFICIAL method of checking fluid level and how to top up if necessary? The car has done 65,000 miles so I certainly didn't expect gearbox problems so soon. Many thanks Jamie. Quote
jackthehat.co.uk Posted October 30, 2006 Author Report Posted October 30, 2006 Oh c'mon fellas... surely someone can help me? It's not all MAP sensors and tyre types you know? Pretty please? Quote
Dave-G Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 Hmm, I never checked a manual g-box so can't help  For anyone who might be tempted to yell "use the search" it seems to produce no results. I may have got this wrong  but the search feature of this forum seems to be quite restrictive? On most forums you get wider options like "last 30 days" "older" etc... Quote

Morning Jackthehat....sorry....yawn....takes a while to get going sometimes. OK. I have the same box as you, and mine has done 95K and is still pretty smooth. The only noise I notice is a snag going into first if you are too hasty. That I think is normal (not allowing enough time for the synchro to match). I checked in the TIS, and whilst not giving instructions for checking the level it does give the capacity as 2.5 litres. Have you checked the leak to see if it feels oily, or could it be clutch fluid?? If you think it is oil, then I'd get the engine warm, and then drain off the gearbox and measure what you get. Then you can refill with a full 2.5 litre charge. If you find that you get almost a full charge when you drain it, I would be inclined to add a dose of molyslip. I've found it to work wonders on other boxes in the past. John Quote
Guest rambo Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 just undo the hex key bolt on the side (bottom) of the gearbox and if the oil drains out it has enough in it, or just re-fill untill it starts to drain out, thats it Quote
jackthehat.co.uk Posted October 30, 2006 Author Report Posted October 30, 2006 Thanks fellas for your help. I'm off down the motorway in the morning so couldn't wait for you lot to reply. I had it in the garage today and the mechanic (who is very good) checked the GB fluid. It was full and in good condition so we ruled out the gearbox itself as the cause. His personal opinion was that it could either be the clutch needing overhauled/adjusted or the clutch could be on its way out altogether. Apparently the clutch on these things is a bit costly to replace. I think I'll see how she goes for a month or two first before facing major bills. If/when she gets worse I'll have to get my wallet opened up. Thanks again. ;) Quote

Hitting the Search button at the top of the page (or HERE) gives you the search options you mention. Quote
