JohnR Posted October 25, 2006 Report Posted October 25, 2006 I have just been fighting for several hours to get Vag-com connected to my Gal. I originally suceeded, but then went on messing about trying out PCMSCAN and Digimoto. When I came back to Vag-com (and after having purchased a registration) I could not get it to connect. I un-installed and then re-installed the USB and USB-serial drivers, but the problem was that I could not get it to configure to a com port within range of the Vag-com software. If you go into "options" "test" on Vag-com (409.1) you only have com port options of 1 to 4. On my laptop (Acer 1415 with XPpro) I messed about for ages trying to get the drivers to install using a com port other than 5 or 7. I unistalled all bluetooth drivers and generally messed up the system good and proper. Eventually, I went on-line and did a search for XP and com-port assignments. XP generally handles these automatically. However, if you go into "System" in the "Control Panel", then click on "hardware" and "device manager" you can find the com port that you have added in the "ports" section. The port used is in brackets. In my case on the last attempt this was 5. If you double click it, you get a dialog box with 4 tabs acrossthe top. Click on "port settings". Don't mess anything up in here, but click on the "advanced" button at the bottom. Now at the bottom you get a drop down arrow with a list of ports! Some of these will say (used) after them. If you are lucky, you will find one in the range 1 to 4 than is not used. Select it. In my case, ports 1 to 4 all said used. I selected port 3 regardless. I backed out then and checked in device manager again. Disconcertingly, the bracket after the com port under the "ports" heading still said (5). I went back in though, and it was indeed changed to 3. I backed out, connected up Vag-com, ran test, found com3 worked fine and saved setup. At the moment, I've got the laptop in the car running a full autoscan (45 mins!). No faults found so far! Hope this saves someone else a few hours!! John Quote

Hope this saves someone else a few hours!! John Just finished the full scan. Bit of a relief. Everything checks out except aux heater glowplug reported as open circuit twice. Also an intermittent on the interior monitoring sensors which I'm not fussed about. I've cleared the faults down and will check them again in a few days to see if they are old ones. If not, I'll have to investigate the aux heater and change the glowplug. Oh...and BTW, it doesn't seem to know that the shaft has snapped on my aircon compressor ;-) Guess they don't have a flow sensor in the refrigerant line! John Quote

JohnR Posted October 25, 2006 Author Report Posted October 25, 2006 English please? im not computer literate so step by step would be good.(thick as pig poo really wen it comes to pcs.) Thought it was quite clear  Probably best not to dabble unless you feel confident to do so and have a "ghost restore" standing by JIC! However, if you want to try com port re-assignments (and don't blame me if you knacker anything ;-)) then here goes:- (Assuming XPpro and sevice pack 2 - havent tried anything else) Click "start" then "settings -> control panel"scroll down and click "system"click the "hardware" tabclick the "device manager" tabscroll down to find "Ports (COM & LPT)"click the + by it to expand the listfind the port added (exact name may depend on interface cable type I think)if it is already in the range 1 to 4 then the problem is elsewhere (cable type or other connection issue?)if the port is set to a number greater than 4 then proceedclick it to open a dialog box with the port propertiesclick the "port settings" tab at the topclick the "advanced" tab at the bottomclick the drop down arrow at the bottom next to "Com port number"see if any in the range 1 to 4 are not marked "used"if so, select one of them (generally 3 or 4 is a good idea)if 1 to 4 are already marked "used" then don't worry. Try forcing it to use 3 or 4 anywaythere MAY be a conflict with something else in your system so when you've successfully made your vag-com connection and done your diagnostics you probably ought to "restore defaults" to the way it was (but you'll have to do it every time you want to run vag-com) happy twiddling, and its not my fault if you bust the thing :19: John Quote

Especially them that dont know how to describe faults, understand general workshop procedures or computers. In the best possible way, you are not ready for it... Nor am I FWIW :( Not meant to go?.. So tell me..what places are women not meant to go? The toillet after you lot have dropped one? :D In the bath after you lot have been in? :) Into the bathroom after you lot have come home drunk as skunks and have finished praying to the big white porcelain god? :( Don't know how to describe faults? I have in all the problems my car has suffered, described as best and as accurately as i can the faults/sounds/lack of sounds/driving / that my car has suffered is suffering. If i say it sounds like a windmill then it does..everyone describes differnt things in different ways and just because i am female does not mean that i fault in the way i describe things... In fact..i would go as so far to say that we have more acute hearing than you lot as we know what time you get in....no matter what you say :P .we can hear a pin drop a mile away!..we womencan describe faults to a tee. understand general workshop procedures? Hmm.....now..i have been learning a lot in general workshop procedures so i think i know more than you think i think i know. :D I know how to jack a car up on an unsteady jack, crawl underneath and start yanking things about :D computers? There are just as many computer illeterate men in the world as there are women...Fair dues..i dont know much about them and when i do manage to fix a problem on the pc it is by pure fluke and not by knowledge... But..knowledge has to be learned somehow..and what better way than by learning from mistakes..or from others?we all have to start somewhere....I have learned some very valuable lessons on the pc..like not to press a link that says your pc is infected..press clean up to clean it up...so i press clean up and it completely wipes the pc so i cant even get it to start!Bummer..learnt from that one. Forgot to add.....i am ready for anything that this pc my car and you lot throw at me...just....not what the kids throw at me!!......:D Quote

faz Posted October 28, 2006 Report Posted October 28, 2006 3 fault codes 65535,17978 & 00588. The first 2 apparently are quite common,I cleared them, took car for a run and they did not return, the 3rd code I expected would show because airbag warning light is on,this is probably a faulty clockspring. jkspoff Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 (edited) I've installed my new VAG COM lead, and it recognises it when I plug it in, but then it faults with a message saying 'device cannot start, code 10'. I have tried the 'fix it' guide on this posting but doesn't seem to work for this issue, anyone any idea as I am now pulling my hair out ! ? Edited February 1, 2007 by jkspoff Quote
jkspoff Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 Now XP thinks that the VAG COM device is something completely different and is auto installing it as something completely different. Anyone know how I can turn off plug and play for devices and automatic driver installs ?? I think I might end up throwing it all through a closed window ! Quote
