I was disappointed by the choices offered by micheldever too.

I live in Romsey and have not found any Nokian stockists in the area, I think I am going to go for the Fotuna's that SparkyPaul has been impressed with and get them from My Tyres and use a local garage to fit them.

... The Nokians sound good but I noticed the Load rating on the size for mine was not listed or am I blind? (215/55/16)

The 215/55R16 NRHi reinforced tyre is load rated at 97.

Thanks Tim

Hi new to this so please be nice,

my Galaxy was 'noisey' on the road and I replaced the fronts (by advice) with Goodyear Excellence load rated 97 and found them to be excellent especially in the wet. Local Ford dealer did a deal and cost

Just a few budget tyre prices, I need 2 new fronts, but are all these reinforced ? as these are what came up on the recommended search, I might try a budget one this time, or is it unsafe false economy ? :D

I can highly recommend the Fortuna F2000s, but make sure you get the 97 rated reinforced/extra-load tyres for this size.

I have covered a several thousand miles on mine now, with a good mixture of local, long distance motorway and (very) wet miles with absolutely no problems whatsoever. These 'budget' tyres have turned out to be far better than the Dunlops they replaced... :D

Hi all..........

After much deliberation i decided to plump for Nankang NS-2's, only to then dicscover like tim-spam has just said... "you must click the re-inforced button" otherwise it wont search for re-inforced tyres... dohhh

Having placed the order with My-Tyres i called them within 5 mins to tell them of my mistake, and a very nice German lady said "no problem, your order is now cancelled..."

Did a bit more searching and phoning around for prices, saw an ad in my local rag from a tyre company called 'Tyreland' (sort of national company), rang em up and asked whats the latest offers....... and he came up with the one listed in jkspoff's list the LINLONG L688. two fitted to the front for

Hi Pacman, I mailed the seller on these yesterday and just recieved a reply. They arent reinforced or heavy/extra load.So dont buy them if you have a Gal!.

If they are 97 load index as the seller implies in the listing, they must be extra-load - they are certainly higher than the minimum 94 required for the Galaxy.

If they aren't 97 rated, then his listing is very misleading indeed. ;)

Mine is 97 rated and states heavy load/reinforced on it.

I shall ask him to double check, coz if they are..i will get a pair!

Have mailed him again ..will see if he replies and let you know. ;)

Hi, I am at home now so I only have the data from the wholesaler to go by and that does not show the tyre as XL or RF , the fact that the load rating is 97 does not mean it has to be XL or RF , Falken also do a 97 V in this size and I know that is not reinforced. I will find out for sure tomorrow when I am at work and let you know, if these are RF or XL then they are a very good buy at this price. Regards, Edwin

The longest lasting tyres I ever had were Tyron remoulds. Either the compound was as hard as nails or the tread was 4 inches thick. Come to think of it, they did used to rub on the wheel arches when turning corners. I swear blind I got about 25k out of them and they were on the back wheels of my 2 litre injection Sierra! And I used to burn rubber everywhere I went! The only downside was that in the wet they had the same amount of grip as oily banana skins. But at

Reinforced tyres have reinforced sidewalls and generally run at higher pressures than standard tyres. They are normally recommended for heavier vehicles such as light commercials and MPV's. 'Reinforced' or 'Extra Load' does not imply a particular load rating, but, for a given type of tyre, the reinforced version normally has a load index 4 points higher than the non-reinforced version. On my car, the recommended tyre is a reinforced tyre with a load index of at least 95 - a tyre with a load index of more than 95 alone is not recommended, and neither is a reinforced tyre with a load index of less than 95 (although I don't think these are available in the 215/55R16 size anyway).

The fact that the Falken is a 97 Load Index tyre means that they are an extra-load tyre - the standard LI for this size is 93. The 97 LI Falken ZE-512 in this size is actually marked RF.

If the tyres he is selling are indeed 97 rated, they will be RF or XL tyres.

The spec for these tyres can be found here...

http://www.fullruntyre.com/en/Exhibit/exhview.asp?pid=58

You can see that the LI rating for the HP199 215/55x16 tyre is 93V, so if these are 97 they are RF/XL.

Hope this helps! :D

The higher maximum running pressures are as a result of the higher maximum load of these tyres - tyre pressure has to be proportionally higher to support the increased load. All 97 LI rated tyres will have a higher maximum pressure than a 93 LI tyre of the same size - any tyre of a higher LI will automatically have a higher maximum pressure, and will be of sufficiently reinforced construction to cope with this.

The LI number is absolute and is a reliable guide to whether the tyres are suitable for the vehicle. Any tyres of the 215/55x16 which have a LI higher than the standard 93 (i.e 95 or 97) are classed as 'extra-load'.

The absolute minimum requirement for the Galaxy is a LI of 94 - for example, there is only one size in which standard tyres (i.e. non-reinforced or extra-load) can be fitted to the Galaxy according to Ford, that is 215/60x15 - these have a load index of 94 in the standard tyre.

I think i would have to put the cost of the tyres on ebay against the cost from my local tyre place who sells them for 49 quid each.fitted.

I think once you have added on postage and cost of fitting, i think id only be saving a couple of quid so at the end of the day i may be better off getting them from my local tyre place. Hmmmmmmm.......

This is actually not so. 'Reinforced' or 'Extra Load' refers to sidewall reinforcement, and NOT load capacity. As a side effect, RF or XL tyres have a load index usually (but not always) 4 points higher than their directly equivalent standard tyre. On the Galaxy, both conditions need to be met - LI 95+ and reinforced / extra load. However, for the 215/55x16 size, this is all fairly academic, as I have never seen a non-reinforced tyre with a load index of 95 or higher or a reinforced tyre with a load index of less than 95, but this is not true for some other sizes. There are plenty of reinforced tyres with load indexes well under 95 - for example, 185/65R14 90H XL, 185/65R15 92H RF - and standard tyres with load indexes well over 95.

This would be relevant for those wishing to fit larger tyres to their Galaxy. For example, a 245/45R17 95Y would meet the load index requirement, but does not have sidewall reinforcement. So the better choice would be a 245/45R17 99Y, as this meets both the LI requirement and has the recommended sidewall reinforcement.

Higher tyre pressures are recommended for RF or XL tyres - if you check the recommended pressures for standard tyres, these are much lower, and far lower in proportion to their load rating. The reason is to do with the reinforced sidewall being less flexible, and therefore generating more heat at lower pressures - the load capacity of a reinforced tyre is actually slightly lower than that of a standard tyre at the recommended pressure for a standard tyre. This is important, as I have come across some tyre dealers whose charts show much lower (and incorrect) tyre pressures for the Galaxy - these may be from earlier models with smaller tyres and have not been updated.
