HI All

I've been out of this forum for a while...I now also own an MG TF which has opened a whole world of activity of it's own...hope you're all well.

Anyway, whats the latest opinion on the best tyres for the Galaxy? I had some Bridgestones, which were very noisy, then replaced the fronts with Dunlop SP- somethigns, which were a lot quieter but only lasted 12000 miles....

Any recent thoughts on which ones to go for? And one dumb question - do you have to specify reinforced tyres?

cheers all

After having recently replaced Dunlops on mine, I am very surprised that you had tyres that were even noisier.

I've fitted Nokian NRHi's, and they are hugely better than the Dunlops, but the wear rate is different to that of the Dunlops. With the Dunlops, the rears had roughly half the wear rate of the fronts, and, swapping them front to rear at 10,000 miles, all four needed replacing at 23,000 miles. With the Nokians, the wear rate of the front tyres is only slightly less than that of the Dunlops so far, but the rears seem to be wearing at only about a quarter as much as the fronts. In other words, at the rear, the Nokians look like lasting at least twice as long as the Dunlops, but at the front they look like lasting only slightly longer.

However, as tyres tend to wear more slowly as they wear, we shall see. But, so far, so good, and they grip so much better than the Dunlops, and are quieter too.

can i just add....if you lot didnt know..something that i learnt at college on my course last week...

One other number to look at on a tyre is a number that follows the word treadwear.....the higher the number the harder the tyre and the longer it lasts but also grip is not as good....the lower the number the softer the tyre is and wont wear as well....but the grip is better.A number say in the 300s is best. Now this number is not put on every tyre..but it is a guide as to how hard/soft the tyre is.

Also..look at what the tyre is made of..and the plys it has in the sidewall and the tread...usually the side is 1 ply and the tread is 2..my full run tyre has 2 on the side and 3 or 4 on the tread,,cant remember which offhand.

Also on your tyres, if you see the word D.O.T. foloowed by a series of numbers then a set of 4..that 4 set gives you the date it was made..so..say..it says 4006..that means it was made in the 40 th week of the year 2006.

Again..not every tyre has this on it and it can be anywher on your tyre from the side you see when its on the car or the side you see that you dont.

Also..even though Dunlops are the recommended tyre for the Galaxy, because they do have a very soft tread, they are better on the back than the front.....

well..shall shut up for now...the tyre has soooo much info on it.....you just have to know how to read it all.

Now the last tyre i got which was a full run tyre...it has so far done nearly 3k miles and it looks brand new still. My last dunlop on the front did around 6k miles and it was knackered.

Dunlops are the recommended tyre for the Galaxy

 And where did you get that little gem from?

Go with Continental and you won't go wrong.....

Posted

i got that gem from every garage that i have been to that has tried to flog me a dunlop saying that they are the recommended tyre by Ford for the Galaxy....Even the last place showed me on his screen that next to the galaxy it states that Dunlops are to be fitted to the Galaxy as recommended by Ford.I take it with a pinch of salt to be honest as i personally don't like Dunlops.

I am extremely happy with the Full Run tyre i have on at the moment..it is quiet and the grip is brilliant..yes it is a directional tyre and a high performance one..but i think it is really good.

Thats a great piece of tyre information Maz, gosh I never stop learning.

I have to tell you, my oldest boy was asking me my advice on what tyres he should go for on his Saab as his last set of boots lasted him 9000 miles and there screwed.

I e-mailed him your bit of info, he's asked me where I got the info' from, I told him Mum,

Whaaaat is his reply,  , oh it's so nice when you can do that.

For prices, My Tyres and Value Tyres are pretty good.

aww hun..im honoured  ...so im NOT totally full of useless info then!

The latest feeling I get on tyres is that they're a little cold to the touch with a gritty rubbery texture.

Anyone else?

Maz, what's a Full run tyre? Ive got Dunlop Directionals on the front and Conti's on the back but are they full run tyres. Is it the loading you're on about?

If you followed the ongoing saga of mo4 and her galaxy you would know that full run is the make of tyre she had put on (as it was cheap) when one of hers fell apart.

If we followed the full saga for all of mumof4's exploits we would never get any work done - however fast you read

Well..i didnt have it on just because it was cheap..it was either that or a dunlop..and i don't like dunlops and i needed the tyre changed asap.Just because it was only 49 quid i think IIRC..does not mean it is crap.

Sooo...my reasons for having it were not based on price..it was necessity and the aversion i have to Dunlops.

The 215/55R16 NRHi reinforced tyre is load rated at 97.

Thanks everyone - esp MO4...I've not heard of Nokians before (and yes, the Bridgestones were a lot louder...). I use Micheldever tyres down here, so I'll give them a ring tomorrow and see what stock they carry.

cheers

Wow!, I'm not even sure why I'm so surprised at the name, still if the tyre is doing its job.

I see Maz you say you have four diffrent brands of tyre on your Galaxy, does that cause any problems with the handling of the car?.

Posted (edited)

Nope

i have two directional tyres on the car(front ones)..car handles very well...a lot better than when i had dunlops on it.I have a firestone, a full run, a toureno and a.... hmmm..cant remember the last one..will go have a looksie

Last is a stunner...full run and firestone are both on the front..the firestone is a fuel saver one.All are reinforced/heavy load.

It's important to remember that all tyres get noisy as they wear down so comparisons are difficult.

For what it's worth, I have always found that Avons seem to be quieter than most and I've yet to wear one out.

I put a set on an old Merc about 8 years ago and dropped it last year with them still looking good for a lot longer.

When I got my somewhat battered S reg Gal it had badly scrubbed fronts and some half worn Firestones on the back. I popped the Avons on (195s) because that was all they had. They've now done 40k and look good for another 20K. I replaced the rears recently, not because they were worn out, but one had virtually self destructed, where as the other looked pretty much as when I bought the car. It is now a lot quieter but I could have been getting a lot of noise from the dying one.

OK, I do a lot of long trips but it is only about 50% motorways.

I have to say that I never have any nervous moments from my tyres so I cannot comment on performance. A personal opinion is that, with modern cars and tyres of any grade, if you worry about road holding, you're driving too damned fast. The same goes pretty well for tyre wear.

Quite simply, there is probably not much to chose between tyres unless you're in some sort of race but I do find the Avons cheap and effective and I hope that I shall be a good bit older before I have to Decide wether to replace like for like or try something else.

This might explain the 3 turns to turn right and 8 turns to turn left MO4 had <_<

No...seriously....I would strongly recomend people stick to matching their tyres on a per axle basis, not only make and model, but also age as the tread patterns can vary year to year.

If you don't then under extreme circumstances you could end up with the handling of a rice pudding. :o

Posted

And, not only safer, it's inevitably cheaper too. Mismatched tyres will tend to cause greatly accelerated wear.

I once had to replace a front tyre with a new spare 'cos of a puncture. The new tyre lasted 250 miles only. It got me home but only just. I replaced both with new ones of the same type and they were still there when it died of rust.

Posted
Well....all i can say is that the Gal handles extrememly well even with 4 mismatched tyres..it handles a whole lot better than when it had dunlops on it..next tyres i will get will be full run ones for the rear and i will replace them both at the same time.But..even though i may like to replace the tyres in pairs..i literally cannot afford it when the replacement of the last tyre was due to tread damage.besides..the firestone on the other side hardly looks worn...

maybe a wee spelling mistake on mo4 part,,,,,but the tyres are called "FULLRUN",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,not "full run" ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I have 4 of them on my gal,,,,,and on old rough roads they are as noisy as hell,,,,though thats not saying that they are the same as mo4 tyre
