El Dingo Posted October 22, 2006 Report Posted October 22, 2006 I have recently signed up to ebay, and have been browsing around trying to get used to everything before buying or selling. (Reminds me of the days when I hung around the car auctions, before actually bidding on a car!) When I signed up they got my name and address. But, when I tried to set up a sellers account today, first they ask for a credit card, INCLUDING the security digit...and I thought, well, hmmmm but OK. Then, not content with that, they want my bank address, sort code and account number... :angry2: At this point I stopped and logged out. Is this really necessary? Is this a 'phishing' site I've somehow logged on to? (www.ebay.co.uk???) This seems to me to be a very high risk request... Any thoughts on this? Quote
mumof4 Posted October 22, 2006 Report Posted October 22, 2006 when you set up a paypal account...they will deposit small sums of money into your account to verify it.Ive done it all and never had any problems. Quote
anadin Posted October 22, 2006 Report Posted October 22, 2006 i was dubious at first so i just used an old account , that only had a few pounds in , just in case anyone emptied it :) , you should be o.k, but just watch the seller fees and paypal fees :angry2: Quote
Guest Gurugal Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 i was dubious at first so i just used an old account , that only had a few pounds in , just in case anyone emptied it  , you should be o.k, but just watch the seller fees and paypal fees  Just don't do it - E bay are muscling you to use their facilities as they then make more money on every transaction - in addition the onus for recovery is then on you - Once they have access to your acount details they can take any monies they feel due and you will have to fight to get it back. Like the man from the bank says DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR DETAILS TO ANYBODY  Quote
Dave-G Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 They need to verify who you are and that you are not using a stolen credit card - or it's cloned details. In addition, if you wish to set up a sellers account, they have to know what account to debit when you spend money, and where to send any money you choose to withdraw when you start selling. It therefore follows that they (paypal-which is owned by ebay) will need details of your accounts. This is done by debiting a token amount from your credit card, you then get your banks statement showing that debit which is accompanied by a series of numbers which you need to activate your paypal account. The end result is that you will have "proved" you are the account holder. There is also a money laundering issue at stake so they MUST know exactly who you are, once you have recieved Quote

johnb80 Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 I've used ebay and paypal for years, to stay out of trouble:-1) Only deal with other users with good +ve feedback accumulated over a few months2) Only use PayPal when purchasing, be careful if you use it when selling.3) Don't respond to the many spoof emails that you will receive. Regards - J Quote
familyman Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Always beware when people insist on cheques-very little comeback when things go wrong, also western union money transfer is suspect. If you sell something that is paid for with a cheque NEVER despatch item until cheque has cleared, always check feedback, esp from china,i've seen computers for sale at bargain prices ,but feedback is made up from people who have bought pap worth 50p. If you have doubts DON'T trade .Another old favorite is fake e-mail asking you to confirm details of your account, another con is the fake e-mail saying your account has been suspended and can only be re-activated by going onto this site which will ask you all your security / bank details , ALWAYS go into your e-bay account to read your messages. But apart from this happy trading! Quote
El Dingo Posted October 26, 2006 Author Report Posted October 26, 2006 Thanks for all the replies. Now I've talked this through with my 'better half' we've decided that it's simply too much information to give out to a 'third party'. There are, after all, other ways of identifying people that don't require full bank account details. And, as Gurugal says, there is the opportunity for abuse. So I won't be using eBay... Quote
