JohnR Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 OK. Just bought a nice Gal (see sig) on the cheap. Couple of faults mostly sorted. Sanden air con compressor has sheared shaft (I reckon) as the hub spins very freely (even with little finger). Gas pressure is fine (at the top of the green area on the halfords gauge) so there are no leaks. If I can find a pump at the breakers over the next few months (I've rung a few, they don't have any at the moment but would typically be Quote
Guest HairyPlateEater Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 Just a couple of things to think about .... Is it definitely a dual air con system? IIRC very few had this fitted as standard. Does it just have the lower vents in the rear near side wheel arch cover or vents in the roof too? No roof vents = single air con When emptying existing refrigerant it should be weighed so you know how much to put back in. dual should take no more than 750g but the gauge should tell you when its full. I reckon you're right. I hadn't investigated yet, but just assumed from the 2 separate temperature controls on the climate control. No, there are no roof vents. As far as recharging it goes, surely if the system is fully evacuated using vacuum, then you just need to put back the specified full charge don't you? Although granted, if you use the Halfords tins the big ones are 540 grms so tricky to gauge 1 and a 1/2. If thats all there is to think about then I'll be keeping my eyes peeled over the next few months for a compressor off a wreck. I don't consider it worth spending nearly 300 quid for a rebuilt one! My first car only cost half of that (an HB Viva)! John Quote
Vanbursta Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 don't want to worry you guys but I just had mine professionally recharged and it took 0.950kg including 10g oil - and it's the single type, I thought it was wrong so I checked the plate and it is correct (the manual and TIS state 0.775kg + - 10% BTW and they are wrong according to Ford technical hotline). The reason I had to have it done was that the Halfords can ruined my low pressure valve (ripped the rubber on top) which seems to be a common problem. Quote

According to the TIS, the charge (for cars without rear aircon) should be 700(+50)grms of 134a and 200 millilitres of the refrigerant oil. :D It sounds to me as if your compressor must have been undercharged with oil! (dodgy!!) John Quote
