geane Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 The problem is when I turn a corner, (sharp or not) the streeing wheal makes a creaking noise(Not very loud but low to medium noise) like when you twist a big rope. Do you think something needs oiling? Thanks In advance. Quote

Guest MATT jr Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 is your steering column rubbing on ur shoes? if you arnt careful you can actually jam up your steering with your feet! MJR Quote
oafcowl Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Mine does the same, I had my better half turn the wheel whilst I was outside the car and you cant hear the noise from the outside just from the in, just cant find where the creaking is coming from, help!! :) Quote
Steveenduro Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Mine did the same a couple of weeks after fitting cheap anti roll bar drop links. For the time being I have sprayed the ends with WD40 and they are silent.I guess they just dry out. I'll buy originals next time. To check, get someone to turn the wheel whilst you touch the link. You'll feel a creak if they are the fault. Quote
AndeeeH Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Sounds like the plastic cowling behind the steering wheel is being rubbed by the back of the wheel as you turn it. Try a drop of easing fluid between the two surfaces. ;) Andy. Quote
Smilge Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Sounds like both the front shock absorber top bushes want a bit of grease. Quote
Guest blatters Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 I had this too. But it was weird. It only made the creaking noise on cold days when the cabin temperature was below about 7c. And the creak - more like a rubbing plastic squeek - was on a certain part of the steering lock not all of the way around the turn cycle. The trouble was it did it when you turned the wheel ever so slightly to correct the car - which you do a lot ;) I tried all the WD40 stuff down the column. I am sure it was plastic in the shroud rubbing because if I pulled on the steering wheel a little then the noise dissapeared. But I couldn't drive like that all the time - yanking the wheel. It was the most annoying noise of the whole collection of squeeks and rattles I accumalated in my personal album! Unfortunately, at the time of sale we had not resolved it. But because it was Spring '06 the noise had flown North and migrated until Winter '06. So perhaps you have my old Galaxy? All the best. Not a solution but at least you know you're not alone. pete white Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 bleeno's right, i have same prob, took it garage and the mechanic told me to turn steering whilst he listened from outside. it was coming from left hand side wheel area, he said one of the bushes was dry on the shock. the problem is getting to it to grease the bugger-still havent got round to doing mine yet Quote

In the end dismantled front suspension and removed both shocks. I thought it was the plastic trim inside the car but strangely transfers the grinding noise through the steering wheel. Quote
jkspoff Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Its most likely the above issue is the actual steering wheel itself, when mine was under warranty it creaked a lot, it turned out to be the steel/plastic steering wheel frame. Replaced and was perfect after that. Quote
andymascall Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 I had this problem and it turned out to be the drop link rod on the off side. Once replaced problem was gone. After reading the advice on this site - that it may have been the shock mount - I did take the time to absolutely smother the nut at the top of the mount with grease - just in case it ever needs undoing!!!!!!! One point to note - the old drop link I took off was simple - one spanner and a 19 mm socket - however the new replacement was a pig - needed a multi-spline tool and a through socket to get them on - make sure you have these or another car if you do this yourself!! Other than that a simple fix - got genuine Ford part and it was only Quote
richyrich Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 I had the same creaking noise when turning the steering wheel some time ago - could only hear it inside the car. I sprayed the 2 springs the the column is held by with wd40, gave them a good wipe with cloth so that no drips and problem disappeared!Try it - you never know. release and operate the steering position whilst it's still got oil on it.
