Anyone got any experience of the Nokian All Weather Plus 215/55 R16 97V XL on a Galaxy??

How do they compare on snow/ice with a dedicated winter tyre, do they last etc..... You can get them for

A few people are running Nokians on the forum and have good things to say about them. Not sure if it's the model you refer to though. Try a search for tyres and there are plenty of posts out there. If you order, dont forget the 3% discount from mytyres.co.uk. Look in the Current Best Deals section - pinned at the top are the instructions for getting the discount. I've got my tyres from mytyres for a while now and can't fault the price or service from them.

Hi,

There is a guy called TEM who owns an XC90 and who has really raved about the Nokian All Season WR's. They have the Mud & Snow symbol and they exceed the requirements for this type of tyre. They also have huge tread depth but he says the handling is no problem. He's got good mileage as well.

The XC90 runs 235/60 R18 so they're different from yours but still a good piece of feedback.

There's a link to the tyre test as well. And I've just taken delivery of my new tyres from mytyres.com and the price and service was excellent. Local garage will change

Do people really need these all weather tyres?I know it can get a bit nippy in the winter, but we don't live in alaska ! surely general tyres should be enough to cope with an average British winter?

I've never known anyone in my area (Southern England) run anything other than summer tyres. From my limited experience in this matter, winter tyres wear more quickly and are much, much noisier than summer tyres.

No you don't. Except that I generally drive to the alps mid-feb fro a week, and also try to find snow in the scottish highlands when it happens.

I've caught bad weather in Chamonix in my old 406 estate with summer tyres and would not recommend it. If the Nokians all weather tyres don't fare too badly in summer conditions, at 69 quid a pop I thought they might be worth considering.

If you live in a rural area where you get a lot of weather and the roads never get gritted I would recommend them, not so much for snow but for frost and ice. Modern M+S tyres have a high proportion of Silica in the tread to improve grip at low temperatures, they break away more gradually when grip is lost and have an open tread pattern to avoid clogging up. When I first used them 15years ago they did wear very quickly and made the car howl like a Landrover.

As my summer tyres had worn out I left the winter ones on all through this year and can say that there is no discernable difference in wear. Admittedly this is all driving on back roads, and if you did a lot of Motorway driving you may notice more of a difference in wear and noise. If you're planning to keep the car a few years the only additional cost will be an extra set of steel rims, which can often be picked up very cheaply.
