Crashing Into Third Gear

Hi all

Just found a new problem this morning,the motor dosent like going into third ,crashes the gears

It wont even always go in when stationary ,with the engine running

Done a search on here and found the references to the cable s,had a look at mine and the ball joints aint come off ,but the bit on top of the gearbox that they atach to seeems very loose ,you can pull it backwards and frowards ,and up and down !!is this right or is there a retaining bolt or something mising

 

Hope you can help as i dont tihnk i can take anymore grief with this one!!!

had the cables off our 52k tdi yesterday( i had to get box out)

there was no slack( up and down ) in the linkage.

there are two parts to it( as you will have seen). one goes over a splined shaft and is held on by a 13mm nut.

the other goes through at 90 degrees to this, its held on by a clip, but this does have a plastic sleeve/liner in it. maybe this is worn.

 

apart from that, there was no play in any of the connections.
