jwilliams Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 Is it just the centre caps? There are often sets on ebay Quote
JohnR Posted October 13, 2006 Author Report Posted October 13, 2006
Is it just the centre caps? There are often sets on ebay
No its not just the centre caps, they aren't too bad. Its for about 50 mm around the centre cap, and the plastic coating has lifted (you can break it off in places) leaving a white powdery deposit which you can brush off leaving a rough finish. The plastic coating on the rest of the wheel is well adhered though, and seems very tough. Wondering whether Nitro mors will shift it, but would need to be careful of the tyres. Anyone know what's best to use?? John Quote

Nothing as yet on what to use to strip off the polymer coating and re-finish them. Thanks, John Quote

mumof4 Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 My 2001 MKII Ghia Alloys look like they have a skin condition. The Laquer is all peeling off....and they look ruddy awful. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 Mine (Oct 2000 build) must be similar to mum-of-4's...first car I have had with alloys on, and maybe the last.... The lacquer is peeling, covered in black and white deposits and they cannot be refurbished by the "mobile" restoration companies. Apparently due to the mirror polished finish, the lacquer just does not "take" when it is sprayed on. Not got time or money to investigate having them "done" which involves stripping and re-machining ! at about Quote
Yep, it was 80 quid (70 after haggling) a wheel at www.wheelestyles.co.uk as well. I went to motorworld at lunchtime....you can get decent looking alloys complete with tyres for about 100 quid a wheel, so if you wait till the treads gone on the current ones, you could always think about using them to carry a set of winter tyres if you live in the hills or drive to the alps in the winter as I do! Have to think about this....still think they could look pretty good sprayed with autoglym wheelpaint if you can strip the polymer coating off. Still waiting to hear from someone thats figured out the best chemical treatment to strip em! Come on guys, someone must have done it! Quote

zeplin43 Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 Read about the alloys problem in galaxy a few times, try independent car painter and see how much for the job. My Seat alloys ar as new (2002),meaning this is a ford problem in general. Is it not Ford to be held responsible for selling such trash at a considerable price. Quote
amagnu2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Report Posted October 20, 2012 Hi, I have refurbed my 2002 gals alloys, As seems the case with alloys of this age the outer 'plastic coating' lacquer goes before the inside recessed bits do, curbing, stone chips etc. what i did to remove the bad stuff from the outer areas ( now don't scream at me, this does work ) take a cheap 1 inch woodworking chisel, make sure its sharp, round off the corners with some fine wet n dry so it don't cut into the alloy ( please wear safety glasses for this, it flies of with some force ) and just use your hand as that is enough force to get the coating off. You will be surprised how easy it comes off. if your chisel is sharp it with leave a ' clean ' cut between the outer and recessed areas, I then used a detail sander with some fine grit paper to provide a good smooth finish, you could do it by hand, but a cheap detail sander is only 20 quid ish, make sure you 'key' the recessed areas also. Then make sure you clean all the dust etc off. the next step is to use a good ACID ETCH primer, this stuff will fill all the minor scratches, and give you an idea how good/bad your wheel is, any areas you need to fill/sand will show here, depending on your level of pickyness, don't forget a couple of coats of paint and some clear lacquer WILL cover a multitude of sins. best bit of advise I can give is do this on a windless day or inside if you can, and more light coats are better than a big one. I did mine in anthracite, will post some pics when I have time as only done one side yet, I'm hoping to get all four done from the same paint cans. will post again to let you guys n gals know if this is possible.
