Guest HairyPlateEater Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 Instructor is wrong as far as I know. Taken from Highway Code website again ..... "If you have a provisional motorcycle licence, you MUST satisfactorily complete a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course. You can then ride on the public road, with L plates(in Wales either D plates, L plates or both can be used), for up to two years. To obtain your full motorcycle licence you MUST pass a motorcycle theory test and then a practical test.Law RTA 1988 sect 97 If you have a full car licence you may ride motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW power output, with L plates (and/or D plates in Wales), on public roads, but you MUST first satisfactorily complete a CBT course if you have not already done so." If in doubt, call DVLA and speak to licencing dept for the correct advice. When I looked into getting a moped for doing the work run, it was explained to me by DVLA that only people that had either passed car test before 2001, or if after this date, passed their motorcycle theory and moped practical test could ride a moped up to 50cc without L plates. I'd double check yourself though. Also, now that she has passed her car test while her CBT is still in force, it will now NOT expire after 2 years. Therefore she can just continue to ride the moped WITH L Plates on without having to ever pass another tes for the moped. If she takes them off, she will be riding without the correct licence category and therefore invalidate her insurance. Quote
