Guest MATT jr Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 Hi all, got a problem with a new set-up at home. over the weekend, i have re-built the home pc (desktop) and have set up a wireless modem router. the desktop now works faultlessly. but, when using the Internet connection, it seems restrictive on what you can do. example, it will allow these through... ALL Internet banks, orange (wanadoo) home page and sub pagesFord, as in their website. what it wont allow is...MSN live messengerand it wont let this forum work either. what ever website wont work on the desktop, wont work on the wireless laptop either, so does seem to be an issue with the wireless router i have had a play with the firewall settings - and on one occasion managed to get the forum to load, but then it wouldn't allow something else to happen (forgot now) so my family are back at home with limited Internet connection, while I'm in Chester for the week, anyone got any advice? Wireless router, same as ours, except ours is the 125mb one MJR Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 Yes - from experience, ditch the Belkin stuff and go to Linksys. That's the only way I got my wireless network to work at home Quote
teresa Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 i tried to set up a network with belkin router for a friend he wanted a wireless network  what a load of @$%& we told him to take it back and swap it for linkseys had it up and running within 5 mins very easy to do and hes had no probs with it at all Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 we will have to if it wont work,,, but would like to try. something else which i thought was odd, if you switch off all of the units security, then NOTHING works at all  MJR Quote
El Dingo Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 I had a Belkin router. Had so much trouble with it, in the end I threw it away and bought a Netgear unit. I've had no problems at all with the Netgear. Mind you, my home network isn't wireless. I had so much trouble with my Belkin wireless set up that I went out and bought a network cabling kit and hard-wired it. I swapped the Belkin wireless for a Belkin wired DSL Firewall router...and it still wouldn't work properly. There seems to be a theme going... It seems that Linksys and Netgear, at least, make good networking kit. Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 jeeze - and i was under the impression Belkin were good?!?!? sounds like we will be taking it back,,,but i will have to have one last crack at it 1st. think i go back home on weds for the day, im at uni you see  MJR Quote
Guest HairyPlateEater Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 I have the same router and have had no problems with it at all since set up. When you go into the router config (192.168.2.1 in your browser), you can change the channel that it is using. I had to play around with different channels to get everything to work ok with both the pc and laptop wirelessly. Also make sure that DHCP server is set to on and lease time set to forever. If you are still having problems, then setting Protected mode to on should also help. Worth having a go with these first I think. let me know how you get on and if need be I can run through all my settings with you to rule other things out. Quote
anadin Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 i have a belkin , no problems , connected all cables as described , switch on power in sequence and it recognised everything and auto-setup, the only thing that interferes with the wireless signal is the microwave at tea-time :( Quote
Guest HairyPlateEater Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 My dad complained yesterday about him being able to pick up the router on his hearing aid :( :o :( ..... bless the deaf old sod .... lmao :D  Quote

Guest MATT jr Posted October 2, 2006 Report Posted October 2, 2006 thanks for the help guys. i have had a thought to what the problem might be,,,it might be something in the connection settings to do with the ISP,,, but cant try it till weds. the laptop and desktop "work" but are both restricted to the same sort of websites. i will let you know,,, like i said, would like to have another go at getting it to work fully. Guest MATT jr Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 lol - well hairy - when i phoned wanadoo (Indian call centre i reckon) they gave me the wrong details, or i didnt understand the "not very well speaking English man" so after an hour of faffing and not getting anywhere - i thought - best phone them 2 more times - to see if the details are right (DNS, IP, Encapsulation, etc) - so i did - detail didn't match - tried the new details, and lo and behold, worked straight away - and its very good - quicker than the old speed touch modem supplied by wanadoo. Thanks for all the help guys! MJR  Quote
Sher Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 I've used different type of Belkin ADSL and DSL router in different locations and have had no problem apart from failed power supplies after 15 months continuous use.Replaced under Belkin's excellent lifetime Guarantee FOC. I have used them on English ADSL, Belgium DSL/ADSL and Spanish ADSL. The Belkin54g range are the easiest to use in comparison with the Linksys WRT54G range of DSL router. The Linksys have some other advantages such as easily obtained 3rd Party firmware, detachable antennae and greater transmitting power(possibilities). The latter is not much of an advantage if the device connecting cannot manage (1) Transmit the same power or (2) be configured to operate at lower speed back to the router or(3) use some kind of Antenna booster to get back to the router I always recommend in the 1st instance to my friends Belkin because of it simplicity in setting up and the lifetime guarantee.(The above recommendation does not apply to the single antenna versions of the F5D7230uk4 DSL devices. I bought one on Ebay, it was flaky. Got my money back from the seller without returning it, he didn't want it. He must have known before he sold it. Why he didn't just contact Belkin and get it replaced for a working one I do not know) I have nothing against the Linksys54g I have 5 of them. They do have their advantages as I state above. I have 4 Belkins as well. P.S. I just remembered the above advantage does not apply to Linksys 54G/GS after v4. There are plenty of reports of purchasers returning their v5 and beyond because of the changes made. Linksys felt forced to introduce the WRT54GL as a result of what was happening(it is by all reports a WRT54GSv4). They do expect a premium for it though. P.S.S. All settings can usually be obtained from a search on the web. I had no problems every time I've need to find them. (AOL, BT, NTL, Belgacom) Quote
