31Firefly Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 Hello, I have had major problems with my wipers. One day they will work the next they wont. Driving along the road and the rain comes on so i put the wipers on and they judder slowly up the windscreen and then stop. I pull over just as i stop they come on (i think they are taking the P*** out of me)??? Any ideas? ThanksGraeme (Not been on for ages as I have moved house and are in the process of building an extension myself. changed internet providers and this is me just getting connected.) Quote
seatkid Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 Do a search  and you will find dozens of threads on this subject. The linkage seizing is a very common problem. Almost as common as lazy buggers who can't be bothered to search. There is even step by step instructions on how to fix them.. :o Quote
funbus Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 yup and do it sooner rather than later as your wiper motor is in more danger of burning out as there is considerable stress on it. I did mine recently, takes couple hrs tops. When u get the whole assembly out and get the spindles out of the casing my tip is to grind a flat onto the spindles before regreasing and putting together. This then acts as a grease reservoir to help prevent it hapnin again. it'll make sense once u have taken it apart! Quote

31Firefly Posted October 1, 2006 Author Report Posted October 1, 2006 Is this something i should try myself? G Quote
Bigjeeze Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 Is this something i should try myself? G Well it all depends on how well you feel you can cope. It is a matter of three bolts plus a cable plug to remove the wiper mech complete (once you have removed the wiper arms of course!) Once you have the mechanism out of the vehicle you can access the wiper spindles . Usually only one is seized but both will benefit from cleaning and greasing. Do a search as Mumo4 has a good description on doing the job. Do not be tempted to leave for long as the chances of ruining the motor are very high. Quote
mumof4 Posted October 2, 2006 Report Posted October 2, 2006 Just for you..bit long winded...but can be done by yourself. http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...wtopic=7898&hl= Quote

31Firefly Posted October 7, 2006 Author Report Posted October 7, 2006 Well its just gone 8.30 pm on a saturday night and i managed to get the linkage out with a little help from a friend.... Took the linkage to workbench and fitted it to the vice. Screwed bolt on the spindle and then hit it with a hammer. nothing happened so i hit it again, and again. Still nothing happened so i hit it a bit harder and guess what? I managed to break the linkage in two. I am now looking for a new linkage mechanism so what is best, one from a scrappy, one from ebay or contact ford and get a new one? or does anyone recommend somewhere i could get one relatively quickly?( i probably should have soaked the spindle with wd40) Thank youG Quote
mumof4 Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 oh my...you didnt even try the wd40?????..you hit it with a hammer??? was it a copperhead one? they come up on ebay quite often at the mo..make sure you get the right one.. where did you hit it? oh my....sorry hun... everything said to use wd40 and treat it gently. best bet i think is a scrappy for one very quick have a gander on ebay..as sometims they have buy it now on them.. best of luck in your hunt. wouldnt go to fords unless you have a couple of hundred spare! maz.xx Quote
31Firefly Posted October 7, 2006 Author Report Posted October 7, 2006 I rescrewed the bolt back on the spindle and then placed a bit of wood on top and hit it. I had the choice of hammers and chose just a normal 20 oz claw hammer. I have been told i have a touch like an elephant so with my 17 1/2 stone bulk i let it have it. I think i would prefer a new one rather than scrappy one seeing as its a common fault and my diy skills!!! G Quote
mumof4 Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 new ones do come up on ebaywont hurt to have a look. a claw hammer....wow.... Quote
