The frequencies of the radio will be incorrect and the region code for the MD will be wrong for this country.

 

Also the data protocol for RDS is different so that is also unlikely to work

I was going to say watch out for the FM channel spacing as I know the US use only the ODD decimals eg 100.1, 100.3, 100.5 whereas we use all of them.

 

A quick google for Japanese FM info threw up Wikipedia

In particular this indicated that the radio will be as useful as a chocolate teapot...
