Had the same problem on a Fiesta and it turned out to be the O-ring inside the works of the petrol cap (not the rubber seal where it closes on the filler pipe). The cap has a moving plunger inside like a safety valve to release pressure and the O ring had perished and was sticking.

I had a problem like this on one of my other Galaxys.

The dealer sorted it. It had to have a new filler assembly as some valve within the assembly had failed allowing fumes into the cabin.

I don't know if the filler assembly can be stripped down as mine was replaced under warranty. Maybe someone else can give more information.

Is the carbon canister split?

Or maybe the breather pipes are broken or split where they go back into the engine bay? These are very hard to locate without removing the air filter box.

Just some ideas...

Now, now. I'm sure you'll fix it before you have to resort to buying a diesel.
