i have had a car with a faulty maf before and engine will idle ok but lacks power. has anyone had a faulty maf that renders the car undrivable - no idle or power?

If the signal fropm the maf is out of spec then then ecu will use a default value so its at least drivable

I had this same problem on my Passat it got so bad you couldnt drive it at all.

Get yourself a new MAF and everything will be fine.

As Nikpv said, if the MAFs signal is non existent, or doesn't match up = the ECU reverts to a default setting.

So it should still run, just lack power.

dipsomaniac, i can only go with what happened on my Passat but it started off with a slight stutter at 4000rpm and then at about 1800rpm, i didnt know what was wrong at the time but after only a few weeks i got in the car and tried to set off and the car wouldnt rev above 1500rpm even slipping the clutch wouldnt work eventually wouldnt even turn over. I had to have the car towed to garage, fitted new MAf and all was rosey again. I must admit i never tried unplugging the Maf as back then i didnt know what was wrong.

This was a 1.8 T Passat.

Hope you get it sorted mate

cheers

when i plug in the maf on mine it wont idle, seems to run ok, when i unplug it it idles perfectly but is slightly hesitant when i pull away.

i replaced with a bosch exchange unit and it made no difference at all, but vag.com comes up with a fault saying low signal. so at present i'm just using it with it unplugged!

sounds like the replacement is duff/wrong model or there is damage to its wiring

is there any way of testing the wires running to the maf? i.e. output test on the connectors in the plug.

otherwise i will have to get on the phone to gsf.

Have you got red/blue, blue and 2 browns, if so I think that the red/blue is 12v supply, the browns earth ans the blue signal - if it helps
