hi guys, i have just bought a vw sharan 1.9tdi 110 and it has done 126k with full main dealer s/h. it is perfect apart from a slight tappety sound that appears to be from the top end of the engine. it fades as the revs increase. the engine does not smoke and pulls like buggery and mpg is great. it sounds very much like the old cortina crossflow would sound if a tappet was out of adjustment. my local ford dealership has suggested it might be pump timing causing sort of a pre-ignition type condition even though the technician agreed it was not smoking excessively and said he thought it was a quiet engine. to me it sounds like i said above and it increases with revs (until it fades) and sounds like one cylinders worth of noise as opposed to all four. are the tappets hydraulic or can they be shimmed? should i just leave it and it'll be ok and accept it as down to the mileage. many thanks in advance guys, taz.

i have since had some info from the "fixafordcar" website and they have said it could be a lazy tappet. this is exactly what it sounds like but is it poss to find the exact one, can the engine run without the cam cover on like some petrol engines can so that i could use a stethoscope to track it down? also does anyone know where i could by a decent quality set of tappets at a reasonable price? many thanks, gary

Tappets are hydraulic.

There tends to be some noise noticable at idle anyway.

The camshaft may have some wear, as may the tappets.

Perhaps remove the cam cover and see what problems there may be?

Other than that, try changing the oil and filter a couple of times within 1000 miles. Use a good 5W-40 synthetic diesel oil, and genuine filter.

hi again,

i got the oil and filter changed at my local ford rapid fit (didn't have time to do it myself). they used a genuine oil filter and ford motorcraft formula-s 5/40 fully synthetic oil. they charged

That was a good price for the oil/filter change.

(Don't be perturbed that the oil is immediately black...)

Good stuff.

I had a knocking noise in my Galaxy that sounded like it was coming from the glove box. It was driving me nuts. I got my passenger to empty everything out of the glove box, but the knocking was still there.

I nearly took it in to Fords for them to find out what it was, then my Dad disovered it was a bit of loose trim on the front corner on the pasenger side that flaps at high speeds. It's now stuck down with a very unsightly lump of Bluetak which was the only thing that stopped it flapping.
