pete white Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 hi, water pump failed the other week which in turn snapped the timing belt and therefore caused damage to the head (ie valves etc.) local garage fixed it, but i wondered if skimming the head would cause power loss. in the week it was being fixed i was using my dads car and since getting mine back i had an inkling that engine seemed slightly less responsive, but could this be me getting used to dads petrol car? jwilliams Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Skimming the head will increase the compression ratio so should increase power instead!! I am guessing you are not comparing like for like. Do you know someone with the same car as you to compare it against? Quote
tim-spam Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Skimming the head should make very little difference to the power output.Sorry to hear about your troubles - how many miles had the car done? Quote
pete white Posted September 20, 2006 Author Report Posted September 20, 2006 my sharan had done 97000 miles, apparantely mechanic reckons water pump bearings seized up which broke a cog in half which in turn broke the water pump housing unit and snapped the belt which in turn snapped my purse strings when he presented me with the bill Quote
Guest Reaper Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Just had head gasket done on my V6 which included a head skim. No change in power. Head skim wasn't covered by warrenty though which was a bit of a bummer  Quote
Brookydave Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Diesel pump timing will have been altered unless it was reset (unlikely!) Quote
pete white Posted September 21, 2006 Author Report Posted September 21, 2006 Diesel pump timing will have been altered unless it was reset (unlikely!)being the half brain that i am, can u please explain what you mean by the timing should have been reset. surely when replacing t.belt they set it to where it should be Quote
Brookydave Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 Certainly to set the timing on the tdi correctly takes a fair amount of time and patience because you have to replace the engine mount, then take it off again due to the location of the pump locating fasteners. This needs to be repeated with checks via vag com if you wish to get the uncorrected (cold start) timing spot on. Mine is spot on and starts on the button even in the cold. Boring I know, but it took me hours to get it right, and I am proud of the fact...CheersDave Quote
