bkmfred Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Hi The missus took our punctured tyre to get sorted today. Tyre was useless so fella told her she needed special heavy load tyres for the rear.(50 quid each) Is this a load of cobblers. Would a standard tyre not do.Its from a 99 Tdi with the ford alloys- i assume they're 16in. Quote

Do a search on tyres - this has been extensivley discussed over the last few weeks - There are certain standards you must adhere to but you will need to research a bit. Quote
mumof4 Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Short answer is yes//heavy load or reinforced tyres only on the Gal..anything else and you are diceing with your insurance if owt happens and you have standard tyres on your Gal. Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Reinforced only - you will have a blow out with anything less. MJR Quote
Guest Reaper Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Speaking as a tyre fitter, no it wasn't coblers. All Galaxy models should run on extra load tyres in their respective sizes. I would advise shopping around though to find the best deals. Quote
bkmfred Posted September 19, 2006 Author Report Posted September 19, 2006 thanks guys, will shop around - I take it its the same then for the front tyres ? Quote
mumof4 Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 er.yes.......never standard tyres..aleways reinforced or extra load tyres on the Gal. Quote

Guest Reaper Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 215 60 x 15's. Unfortunately, the mk1 was only blessed with 15" rims. Although if anyone knows of a nice cheap set of 18's? Quote
Guest HairyPlateEater Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Mine are 16" - 2.3 ghia x ..... can't see why the 2.8 v6 would have smaller rims .....? Are they the standard fit Ghia Alloys? Quote

Yes, they are standard fit ghia alloys, but only 15". Would have prefered 16's. It's hard to tell the size from the pic, but as you can see, they are standard rims. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a295/Reaper67/misc.jpg Quote
MrT Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 My previous 97 2.8 Ghia had very different wheels to those, the spokes had flat surfaces that curved into the rims. Quote
bkmfred Posted September 21, 2006 Author Report Posted September 21, 2006 the galaxy i recently bought has 2 front tyres which do not say heavy load/reinforced. However they do say 93 on them. They are 215/55 16. Are these just standard tyres then. One tyre dealer tells me standard tyres are OK on the front its the back that def need to be heavy loaders. These front tyres are lookin a bit baldy so please advise what i need. Cheapest heavy loaders i can get are 55 quid. Quote
Andrew T Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 They will not necessarily have the words Reinforced or Extra load on them, what they must have is a load index of 95 or above. Check in your handbook or inside the fuel filler flap where you will find a list of the correct tyre sizes (including the speed and load index) for your model. Quote

Guest HairyPlateEater Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 No ... his is an early Ghia model. Ghia X with the 3 spoke alloys were 16" IIRC, Ghia was 15" as standard with the 6 spoke alloys. This changed whith the renaming of the trim levels when zetec and above were given 16" alloys. Load index has to be 95 or above (94 at a push with some XL or RF tyres) 93 is unsafe and need changing quickly. Try www.mytyres.co.uk for a good deal and then do a search for details on how to get the club's 3% discount off their advertised prices. Quote

You need 94 rated or higher all round for the Galaxy - any lower is not acceptable. This means that, for 215/55x16, you have to have reinforced or extra-load tyres - load index is usually 97 for this size, or 95 for Dunlops. There is only one size in which standard tyres can be fitted to the Galaxy, that is 215/60x15 - these have a load index of 94 in the standard tyre. ...can also highly recommend www.mytyres.co.uk  Quote
Andrew T Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 To expand on this; Looking at the Dunlop 215/55 x16 -95H rf on my Galaxy it has a maximum load of 690KG and a maximum pressure of 49PSI. This morning I parked along side a Mercedes fitted with Dunlops which had the exactly the same tread pattern, they were marked 215/55 x16 -93W maximum load 650KG maximum pressure 44PSI. The Galaxy Handbook gives full load inflation pressure of 49PSI, so if you had the 93 rated tyres you could severely over inflate the tyre. Quote
daz131 Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 I have a 2.8i v6 and it had standard mondeo tyres fitted when i bought it,it was used by a family and the tyre wall was wearing out if you have kids and use the full capacity of the gal i would advise you to use the reinforced ones. a little more expensive but you cant put a price on your safety... regards Daz p.s mine are 15" factory standard alloys with inward bending spokes they sound the same Quote
tim-spam Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Tyre load index is not dependent upon tyre size at all. A load index of 92 gives a load rating of 630kg, 95 gives 690kg, and 97 gives 730kg. I think you will find that if the load rating is less than the minimum recommended by the manufacturer (in this case, 95), you may have problems with insurance, police, etc. As regards reinforced tyres, these have reinforced sidewalls and generally run at higher pressures than standard tyres. They are normally recommended for heavier vehicles such as light commercials and MPV's. 'Reinforced' or 'Extra Load' does not imply a particular load rating, but, for a given type of tyre, the reinforced version normally has a load index 4 points higher than the non-reinforced version. On my car, the recommended tyre is a reinforced tyre with a load index of at least 95 - a tyre with a load index of more than 95 alone is not recommended, and neither is a reinforced tyre with a load index of less than 95 (although I don't think these are available in the 215/55R16 size anyway). Hope this helps.Just to clarify the situation regarding reinforced tyres and the load rating index, which you will see are not the same thing. Quote
