NikpV Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 Right - for all you network gurus  Currently I have a wireless network at home internet ->smc barricade->d-link wireless access point (dwl2000) -> 2 laptops and pci wireless card in desktop. I also have a hp laserjet4 printer - parallel connection + linksys print server (wired) efsp42 (with 4 port switch) can I buy another Wireless access point (as a bridge~) and connect the print server to it so I can locate the printer elsewhere. I know I can get a wireless print server but for parallel printers they are in limited supply and tend to be expensive (relatively) Quote

MJR  cheers mattjr that was one of my options unfortunately its now been on 3-4 days for ythe last 3 weeks and the equivalent d-link one is only available in the us atm - perhaps I'll ask 3.5 to pick one up   - Ive picked up a d-link ap from ebay - if it doesn't work as a bridge (which it should) I'll put it back on ebay Quote
Guest HairyPlateEater Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 why have the printer elsewhere? I'm presuming there would be a good reason to spend Quote
NikpV Posted September 20, 2006 Author Report Posted September 20, 2006 Just moved house and Missus doesnt want to have the printer in the dining room (where desktop is so that we can monitor the kids - I dont need a long parallel cable - I already have a wired printserver so I only have to get CAT5 but I am trying to avoid a) wires hanging out of the ceiling or :D chasing the wall or c) fishing in tha cavity. Since rooms are still being re-arranged (sigh) the most flexible solution is to go wireless. Ps I'm sick of chasing walls - I still have 4 backboxes and 10ft to do for the new kitchen ring (Part P police P off :) ) Quote

NikpV Posted September 20, 2006 Author Report Posted September 20, 2006 Cheers bj at the moment I'm doing it with an sds+ drill with an armeg wall chaser chisel which is slow but compared to a diamond wheel chaser a bit cleaner - wonder if I can find some stock of the chaser since tools are the best investment :) B) :D Quote
gregers Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 er with out turning this thread into a diy discussion but hear goes, cant you feed up from under the floor and chase behind the skirting boards thus making replastering a lot less then your method ? Quote
NikpV Posted September 20, 2006 Author Report Posted September 20, 2006 er well yes but concrete screed over pot & beam downstairs :) Quote
Smilge Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Why do you need a print server? Just add a network printer... I know you need the desktop PC switched on to print from the laptops, but how often do you need to print? That's the way I've done it. Hope that helps.....? Quote
markmck Posted October 25, 2006 Report Posted October 25, 2006 I added a wireless print server to my wireless network although this was for a USB connection but to be honest it was very unreliable. I think the best option is to either get a proper network printer or just add the printer as a shared resource over your network and leave it connected to a PC somewhere in the loop. Alternatively get a parallel-USB converter and pick up a USB wireless print server but I think you will end up having more problems than its worth. Quote
