big_kev Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 Big Kev, I don't know who you are refering to to, but have you ever towed a trailer? Radiotwo Yep Quote
big_kev Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 Also please do not tow anything ( with its own braking ) over 1.5 Tons with a Galaxy it is illegal..It's not. I think you will find it is illegal to exceed the maximum towing wieght for a vehicle. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong on this ( assuming public road etc.....blah de blah de blah ). The reasons for this should be obvious but as some readers are having difficulty I will explain it. You will crash or cause a crash.......quite simple really. Quote
big_kev Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 you could try asking this bloke :) http://www.metacafe.com/watch/305691/caravan/ I rest my case Quote
big_kev Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 Big Kev, I don't know who you are refering to to, Radiotwo Thats strange I think everyone else does Quote
tim-spam Posted February 21, 2007 Author Report Posted February 21, 2007 I think you will find it is illegal to exceed the maximum towing wieght for a vehicle. You're right, but a Galaxy weighs more than 1.5 tonnes, so towing 1.5 tonnes with a Galaxy is not illegal. However, the maximum recommended towing weight is less than or equal to 85% of the car's kerb weight. Most Galaxies weigh around 1700kg, which gives a maximum recommended towing weight of 1445kg. By the way, who did say that they stopped quicker whilst towing? My information is that it takes around 20% longer to stop from the same speed when towing a caravan than when driving solo. Quote

I said tons not tonnes......I ain't gone into new money yet. A galaxy weighs around 1.5 tons...might have me maths wrong might be just under 1.6 tons ( not tonnes ) Edited February 21, 2007 by big_kev Quote

tim-spam Posted February 22, 2007 Author Report Posted February 22, 2007 (edited) The kerb weight of a Galaxy LX TDI = 1724kg (higher spec models will be heavier). 1 tonne = 0.984 tons. Therefore the kerb weight of a Galaxy LX TDI = 1.697 tons and the recommended towing limit = 1.442 tons. Edited February 22, 2007 by tim-spam Quote
tim-spam Posted February 22, 2007 Author Report Posted February 22, 2007 One more thing - the legal maximum weight a car can tow is the weight it has been Type Approved to tow. In the case of the Galaxy TDI, this is 2000kg - scary... Quote

tiny Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 Towing speed can be easily gauged by the length of queue behind you car- 1-5 cars = 10 mph faster than current speed5-10 cars = 20mph faster10-20 cars = 30 mph hour faster20+ cars = foot flat to floor, top gear. Should get rid of a few caravans! Oh come on its only a joke! Quote
