NikpV Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 fuel from the non firing cylinders combusting in the cat????????? Quote
wood73 Posted September 17, 2006 Author Report Posted September 17, 2006 I thought that, but what could be causing the misfire?could the coil pack go just like that? Quote
johnb80 Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 It's not unknown for the coil packs to fail on V6's, if you look at the packs closely you might find a small hairline crack of evidence of tracking. Sometimes placing the pack in a hot oven for a while and filling any cracks with epoxy resin gives good results. You could try disconnecting the packs in turn to find out which one is causing the problem. The only other possibility is the plug on the ignition side (assuming it's not the ecu which is very unlikely). Don't run it in this condition or you'll be paying out for a new cat. sepulchrave Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 The Cat should get very hot, dunno about glowing since the full length heatshield prevents me from seeing, do you have the heatshield in place? Don't trust diesel owners on this one, their turbo absorbs most of their exhaust heat and consequently their Cat runs cooler and works differently (different gases see). Misfire WILL be HT related, last time I disturbed the coilpack while replacing the thermostat housing It took ages to get rid of the misfire, the leads are VERY sensitive (especially when old and basically knackered). Pull all the plugs and check for the sooty one, there's your dodgy lead. Did you use the coilpack and leads off your old engine? Quote

wood73 Posted September 18, 2006 Author Report Posted September 18, 2006 thanks for the advicehad a look this morning and 2 of the leads on the top row of the coil looked to be crossing over each other so swapped them round, straight away it was better, but still a bit of a miss. unplugged the maf and hey presto sweet as a nut.only problem is now the auto box is playing up so time for a post on that.thanks again Quote
