Can,t Select 1st 2nd 5th Reverse
vickigalaxylover replied to vinny's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I had same problem with my old 96 plate gal, the cables kept popping off the selector at the gearbox. you can just about reach it through the back of engine bay and battery tray. I ended up using some good heavy duty non release plastic ties ( the ones you pull tight) they managed to attach the cables onto the selector mechanism for many years, as it can be a costly repair. I had exactly the same problem before the repair. -
Hi I have also got 2.3 ghia with cruise control, also doesnt work, I am beginning to think the switches on brake and clutch pedal maybe faulty, or possibly the vacuum pipe that controls speed (this runs from behind control stalk - I think) these are the only culprots i can think of - espescially the switches on pedals, as my old mk1 galaxy switches used to burn out. If i have any joy i will be back on soon.

May I suggest that the CAT maybe clogged, I experienced all of above, it cut out during a long fast journey, all electrics and mechanicals were ok, eventually she refused to start at all, so mobile mechanic came out and checked everything i checked. the cat was last, but he shook it and sounded like pebbles on a beach, replaced cat and now purs.

No Gears
vickigalaxylover replied to surfin daddy's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I don't think that this is the splines issue as a) it wouldn't affect the gearchange at all and b} the splines problem is only encountered on the MK2. It is either the gear selector cable or possibly the selector bolt has fallen out which is quite common on the Mk1 - do a search. I agree cable probs more likely.... also good luck from me -
hello one and all, I have progressed from MK1 2litre petrol manual glx galaxy, onto a MK2 2.3L ghia manual petrol. All is great, except more electrical/ electronic issues. 1)I have an issue that I have factory fitted cruise control, which doesnt appear to work at all, I have looked for fuses and relays relating to CC, but to no avail, is is possible to switch off or on within Vagcom? Is it an expensive fix? 2)both rear door electric windows have stop working a while ago, but i have a feeling a cable fault somewhere, hopefully in doors looms, and not in boot hatch, like in MK1.... Is there anywhere else I should check if not cable faults in doors? 3)on a tangent, I occassionally experience that galaxy wont start after being switched off for a few minutes, I can hear when it wont start as fuel pump doesnt whirr in prior to starting, I have been known to arm and disarm alarm and sometimes this works... this is an intermittent fault which occurs randomly regardless of weather and driving conditions,( answers on a postcard please) It would be great to have cc working as planning europlod to spain & france next year, if cruise control doesnt work need to fix windows.... or both :) :) Many thanks Dunc

No Gears
vickigalaxylover replied to surfin daddy's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Is your car manual or auto, I lost all gears except 3rd and 4th, just over a year ago, my car has 105,000 miles on it. I discovered that although linkages on both ends of cable were attached, and gearshift was a tad floppy, the selector at the gearbox end had one of cables had popped off its balljoint. I cured this by popping back on, and to stop it popping off again I used plastic cable ties (the non undo kind) to maintain its attachment. It still is working today, had only cost 50pence, and I am confident the cable tie will last longer than the original Ford plastic part. I hope this offers some answer. -
Tail Gate Wiring Loom
vickigalaxylover replied to mtidman's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I have similar issue with my mk1 2litre glx, I've had central locking issues, window issues, light issues, wiper issues too, to name a few as a result of loom becoming brittle and breakdown. All have been rectified by splicing in new lengths of cable at the point of breakage, just strange that galaxy arteries seem to go through this very active armpit!!!! I would suggest that if you have enough flexibility on cables in situ, cut a clean joint and add extra cable as I found there wasnt much give in cable run between tailgate and body -
I'm sure Aircon was working when viewing the galaxy to buy.... but it was many months before deciding to use it, only to find didnt switch on!!!! A mobile aircon man came round and ran gas in, only to find tiny holes on both pipes at the back of engine bay :o I have heard it is expensive to get this repaired... At least the compressor is still working, shame it dont get cold....

1997 Glx And Abs
vickigalaxylover replied to pillboxhunter's topic in Questions about the Ford Galaxy
This in incorrect, ABS was optional on low end models on all Mk1's, I remember it well. My first Alhambra did not have ABS, most early Fords (inc Ghia IIRC) didn't either. Well I will have to accept that is the truth as I have had a quick info search, and found that info of standard equipment still is very difficult to source. thankyou for your prompt reply, I have since found that GLX models are suppossed to have electric heated wing mirrors... Is there anywhere I can get material about my Galaxy trim and Spec???? I havent got owners handbook (comes with car from new) so feeling my way around car to get to know her... 1996 2.0i Galaxy GLX - 80k miles -
1997 Glx And Abs
vickigalaxylover replied to pillboxhunter's topic in Questions about the Ford Galaxy
Hi I have understood that ABS was standard on all models from when Galaxy was launched. What I am saying is it isnt very clear what is the actual fact. I purchased my Gal back in April, without the knowledge of whether it has or hasnt got ABS(much like Pillboxhunter). After purchase I have found out that it is standard fitment on all Galaxys...therefore if not operating this would render insurance null and void as it isnt working in the event of an insurance claim for RTA. My brakes work fine as standard brakes, but the fact that I have tested the ABS effect on a few occassions(on quiet roads/ empty carparks) only to find they dont work!!! My ABS light has possibly been disconnected...(possibly as cheap fix?!). These factors highlighted make me nervous as to what are the facts!!! Is ABS standard - as stated on reputable publication (Haynes Manual) If so - Faulty ABS should be rectified as this could cost you more in long run due to no payout for claim in event of RTA. Drivers Door Lock?
vickigalaxylover replied to andrew welsh1958's topic in Questions about the Ford Galaxy
-"also during recent wet weather central locking has been playing up, thanks in advance for any advice or help" Just to add, if you already havent rectified above problem, check the rubber cable gaiters that are located in top of tailgate hatch. These are very prone to splitting and have been known to be the route of most electrical gremlins, i.e., door lock(s) in this situation... The reason is cables become stiff and subsequently the cables rub against each other causing some cables to become bare and short each other causing malfunction in system. The rubber gaiter being split will greatly increase the issue - espescially as water from rainfall/ carwashes penetrates the electrics in that area. I hope this helps - If not I guess I was barking up the wrong tree!! Vickigalaxylover '96 Blue 2.0i Ford Galaxy GLX 80K miles
