Air Con Compressor/aux Belt
gordon lonsdale replied to muppetofdoom's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
3 options for you A---dont turn on the aircon, B---remove electric clutch plate from compressor , C-----disconnect electical connection to compressor . I've run my 1.9 for years without a clutch plate ! Sorry MOD I now see what you mean .. The pulley is fairly easy to get off and the bearing is inside it ..trouble is the alternator has to come off and the compressor unbolted to get enough room to get a puller in to take off the pulley (its only held on by a circlip) .I dont think you need disconnect the aircon pipes just waggle the pump round to make some space .Difficult for a non mechanic I would imagine .How long for a good mechanic then all you galaxy experts ?? ..........1 1/2 hours ?? -

SG. From recent experience I can assure you that you would'nt nessesarily feel play in your roadwheel when your wheel bearing has gone rarely I think do they show slack its usually damaged balls or races . Does the noise change when changing direction ..ie left or right hand bend.I would recomend you completly eliminate hub bearing probs afore looking elswhere . -
For the last 5 years I've been running my 2001 tdi suffered quite a few niggles but nothing major mileage is 100 000.......but I've just aquired very very cheaply 99 /2000 mk1 2.3 petrol auto thats done only 42000 with full service history , underneath its miles better than my diesel and as I only do 5000 miles a year could this be the one to keep..its certainly lovely to drive and Ide be

Small Disaster

I reckon a 1/2" bsf h/t bolt and nut could take up the ovality but you are all so right about possible consequences..taint worth the worry for -

Hello Seatkid , What is Belzona ? A small spanish town perhaps ? or is it a SEAT based code ? ..anyway the threaded hole is for the bolt which clamps the hub carrier to the strut , luckily the strut is unaffected. The strut passes through a large hole in a sort of extention to the hub carrier forging and forms the upper fixing and locating for it . The lower end is secured to the swivel on the wishbone . Interesting thought here ..do engineering mahine shops charge the same hourly rates as garages?..comments invited . -
Last weekends main job was to fit a new front wheel bearing to the old mk2 diesel, painful story cut short ...head of bolt securing hub carrier to strut shears off... after a lot of drilling from both ends finally got the hub carrier off only to find that I've made the hole with thread oval and removed half the threads . My first thought was just to fit a longer high tensile bolt and a nut but I'm worried about the half to threequarters of a mill of ovality .Its still in bits and I'm wondering about fitting a whole second hand unit ( bearing and all )...............Any thoughts chaps ?? ps would a mk 1 hub and carrier fit ??

Hi all, I've got a slight drip from the water pump on the old mk2 diesel...another little chore for me , a mate however says I should replace the cam belt as well if its got any antifreeze on it .. can he possibly be right?.. I thought antifreeze was friendly to rubber etc . Would love to hear your comments . Gord

Thanks mate its for my sisters Galaxy , haven't had a look yet but garage is saying it can't be done but i'm pretty sure it can and has been  I bought my galaxy (1.9tdi) with the air con not working , later found out some bright spark had removed the electric clutch on the pump , it runs fine though no air of course ...... will I ever fix it ?????????

Transmission Noises
gordon lonsdale replied to gordon lonsdale's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Thanks for that Sparky but I cant see how it can be tyres causing it as they've bin on for the last 2 yrs and though they have always been a bit noisy... they are Dunlop Sp s , this noise has developed gradually over this last few weeks .Any ideas how you diagnose a diff ? And thanks all -
This last few weeks and over maybe 6/700 miles the old 1.9 mk 11 manual has slowly developed a low growl/whine at 40 to 70 both while accelerating and on the overun , its totaly speed related only - and also happens while coasting out of gear.Could it just be a wheel bearing or do I have to face the awful reality of a bu..ered diff ? Oil level and spec are fine ,mileage is 95000 .

MY 2001 TDI 6 SPEED MANUAL IS COMING UP FOR 90,000 MILES NOW AND I'M THINKING OF CHANGING THE GEARBOX OIL (A) ELIMINATE NOTCHY GEARCHANGES , AND ( B) TO LENGTHEN ITS USEFUL LIFE .......WHICH OIL SHOULD I USE , AND SHOULD I CONSIDER AN ADDITIVE ......... 20 OR 30 QUID SPENT NOW MIGHT ENSURE ANOTHER 30/40,000 MILES, OR MORE . ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS WELCOMED REGARDING THIS OR OTHER PREVENTIVE MAINTAINANCE IDEAS.........THANKS GGORDON

Halfords Oil
gordon lonsdale replied to adrianf.'s topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I bought my oil change materials today , cost for 4.5 litres of 505 01 spec Comma synthetic (marked for pd engine on can) and a Fram filter , 27.65 , quid . Other suppliers would have charged nearly 40 quid for these items. ........................BEDFORD BATTERY CO >>>>>>>>NORTHAMPTON BEDFORD MILTON KEYNES & WELLINGBOROUGH > Any suggestions as to best gearbox oil for my Gal 6 speeder tdi and recomendations about additives ( mainly to cure a slow / notchy synchromesh on second .)........................THANKS TO EVERYBODY FOR MAINTAINING A FANTASTIC SITE. ........GORDON
