  1. OK thanks - I was tempted to ride my luck but thats good advice - I have booked it in for tomorrow for that and an after run pump cuz thats getting noisy and intermittent too. I had a thought - I only see the gauge going up and down as it warms up till it finally settles at 90. Could the fluctuations be the pump kicking in and out as it tries to run then sticks again? I guess it could pull colder water from the back 1/2 of the car? Cheers Steve
  2. Hi The temperature sensor on my 54 diesel is going up and and down while the engine is warming up and then seems stable at 90 after about 15 mins. I guess this is a dodgy sensor? The question is I am going away towing the caravan and may not be able to get it fixed... Is the radiator fan that comes on when the engine works hard driven by this sensor or by a simple thermostat in the radiator - in other words will it overheat without a fully working sensor? Thanks Steve
  3. Hi Sorry but I've read this thread (and others) and confused myself I am looking for a vag com for a 12/04 tdi. There was a suggestion earlier that the later ones may have changed to CAN bus? How can I tell what I have? Can you tell from the connector? Thanks Steve
  4. I consistently get 48-50 on my run to work which is 40 miles down fairly clear trunk roads. I can get 55 on a motorway trip if I take it easy. My record is 64 on a 100 mile motorway trip when I had more time than I needed so I just sat in with the trucks at about 58mph I think you need to be doing longer journeies to get this - for the first 10 miles or so my CPU says about 40 then it stretches out. All in all including the short trips I average about 46. Steve
  5. Hi I am now going mad and would appreciate any advice... I had the tyres balanced and I thought it was getting better... took it for a service today (different garage) and they said it was shaking. Driving home its got worse and worse till it makes me feel sick. Shakes worse under load but still can feel it while rolling in neutral. Revving the engine while stationary doies not shake. I am going to take it back to the garage that did the flywheel/driveshafts etc tomorrow and see what they say.. Is there anything else that can cause shaking like this or is there something wrong with the repair? Has anyone ever had these parts changed and found them to be faulty afterwards? I feel like I have gone right back round the block to where I was before I started all these repairs. Had enough. Going for a beer now :-( Steve
  6. Update Got it back yesterday... Flywheel had siezed itself solid and become a single mass flywheel (presumably an out of balance one) . The driveshafts were shot (one had been running without a boot which makes me wonder what you get for a service but never mind) and the gearbox needed repairs to 2 synchros and a new bearing.. 1500 quid... :-( Actually I think for that lot it could have been worse. Massively better.. Now I've just got one slight problem left - a shaking which seems to be almost like it comes from the road surface and is not cured by knocking it into neutral.. Thanks Steve
  7. Hi My 54 tdi (125000m) has for a while had a shake when you drive at about 2000 rpm. I have seen others on here mention it's like driving on a cattle grid. No-one has found what it is. It has also become more and more difficult to engage reverse. Today coming back up the motorway the shake turned into a grinding rough vibration which is worse when I put my foot down and goes away when I take it off. I also found it hard to get into fifth. You can feel it at slow speed but can't really hear it unless you go above 60. There is no vibration revving the engine in neutral and the noise does not change with lock (it's hard to tell though). I am guessing it's the gearbox ? I don't particularly want to scrap the car as I do a lot of miles and I would wipe the value straight off a new one. If I get it repaired (I assume I will be in for the dreaded DMF replacement too) will it be worth it? Is the car likely to go back to trouble free motoring or is it a waste? What I mean is are the gearbox and clutch the weakest parts of this car or is something else expensive liable to go? Thanks for your opinions Steve
  8. Hi I have a problem which sounds identical to the power steering pipe oscilation problem but that was in MK1? It seems to have come on with the cold weather. When not moving or moving slowly I hear a flapping / graunching sound from the front left when the wheel is above about 2/3 lock and when i move the wheel in both directions. No noise when driving normally - only when manoevering. My local garage took it away today and looked at it, checked everything was tight etc and found nowt wrong and when they brought it back there was no noise either so I can't blame them for not finding it. It's back again now though. Any ideas? Thanks Steve
  9. ok Found the FAQ section now - missed it in my search before. I know what to do now - sorry for the wasted thread Cheers Steve
  10. Hi 54 Mk II... I got a puncture (right outside the house which is useful). The wheel winder only went a few turns before it started clicking when I turn it left and will not raise the wheel again when I turn it clockwise - it turns too easily as if something is just sliding. The wheel is down about 4 inches. a - is this only as far as it goes? I expected further b - if not how do I go about getting it off? Can you get the whole lifting unit off and fix it somehow? Thanks for your help Steve
  11. Hi I seem to be doing a lot of miles in my 54 Gal diesel at the moment (only 60k now but going up like a rocket) and I am wondering how many miles I will be able to get out of it before I have to change it? The most I have ever got out of a diesel is 130k from a peugeot but that had to go because the electronics were unreliable rather than the engine. Cheers Steve
  12. Has anyone had this problem associated with the heat? On these very hot days if the back of the car is in the sun, the back sensor sounds continually until i have driven a few miles and presumably it cools down. I have a tow bar would this affect it? Steve
