I have the same problem on my wife's 02 Zetec. Started making an awful noise when low speed steering. Turned out the level was low, topped it up and worked okay for a few days til the level dropped again. Upon inspection I can see that the gaiter on the near side of the rack has split and is leaking oil. I'm guessing the split gaiter has allowed road dirt and grit into the rack seals and those have failed. the nearside wishbone has a light coating of oil all over it. I've sourced a rack from GSF for £260 using a 35% code they have at the moment (GSF35) when you return the old rack they give you £132 back so the rack costs £131 inc vat. Not bad I think. Picking it up tomorrow so will probably have a go myself over the next few days. Hoping it's not too much of a job. Thinking of getting in some new track rod ends too incase I wreck the old ones getting them off.
