  1. After some research it looks like this is potentially a job that could cost 25%+ of the cars value to put right. Might be time to get rid and lease a new one I think - I'm getting pissed off with keeping old sheds going, it's never ending!!
  2. Thanks for the reply. Any idea what it cost to fix or how big a DIY job it is?
  3. Just started yesterday, I'm getting a fair old drip of what looks like clean/clear water coming from the drivers side lower air vent. It's enough to have soaked through the carpet. The car doesn't appear to be using coolant and the water it clean so I'm thinking it could be condensation from the air con (which is working). I've just had a good crawl round under the car to see if there was an obvious air con condensate drain that might have been blocked but couldn't see anything obvious. Car is a 2003 petrol galaxy btw. Thanks in advance.
  4. As above, speaker grilles come off with the door card. Don't try prising them off, they'll snap. I know this from experience. Before spending money on replacement speakers check the wiring in the rubber gaiter feeding the door . Wires in there are very prone to breaking.
  5. Just noted yours is a mk1 Clive, mines a mk2 hence no relay in this steering column.
  6. Fixed. Replaced starter today with a second hand unit off eBay.
  7. Thanks Clive. I'll bear that in mind. The breaker I got the starter from are actually sending me another to try so I'm going to give that a whirl first; I reckon I can get the starter replaced within 30mins, so it's no big job if the replacement does the same thing.
  8. Another point... It isn't that big a deal really but I'm assuming there could be long term wear on whatever ring gear the starter is engaging in the box.
  9. That's the thing, starts fine, immediately release key, then it grinds. It's as if the bendix is sticking in the engaged position very briefly. When testing out of the car the bendix appears to be snapping in/out on application of 12v exactly as you'd expect. Could the relay controlling the solenoid be sticking open, that's the question?

  11. Car is a 2003 2.3 Petrol. On starting the car you get a short "grind" which sounds very much like the bendix isn't retracting quickly enough. I managed to source a starter from a broken car and just spent 2hrs fitting it...jesus that undertray is a right PITA. Anyway, went on fine. Went to start and all it did was pop fuse 26. Tested the old motor and applying +12v to the solenoid (I think) sees the bendix pop in/out quick smart, no signs of if sticking at all. So, the question is, what controls the timing of the bendix engagement/release? I seem to remember reading about a relay somewhere but can no longer find the link. Any ideas?
  12. I've got a slightly different issue. My sensors work fine but then the system never turns itself off, the button is permanently illuminated orange until you press it. VCDS-Lite reports an intermittent fault to ground from the rear nearside sensor. I'm inclined to just leave it though and manually turn it off unless someone knows if replacing the reported faulty sensor would clear the issue. to csj - I'm in Leeds and have VCDS-lite working. I'm not sure you can do much more than read and clear codes from the limited number of modules you can actually see though. You can buy a compatible cable from Ebay for very little money and VCDS-Lite (used to be VAG COM) is a free download. If you are ever anywhere near LS26 then I'd hook it up for you no problem.
  13. Right....so I got the car back off the inept dealer on Friday - they had it nearly 2 weeks and still not fixed the cruise control. It took them this long to diagnose a faulty speed control vac pump and I'm waiting on them sourcing a replacement part. this involved me doing all the chasing up and bascially having to become a pest to get them to give me my bloody car back. Not happy. I suspect I may wait forever for this as they have generally been utterly contemptable in their part of this transaction. Anyway, I digress. So, my CC unit is still flashing - I poked a brush into the left hand grill on the front, gave it a wiggle. I then stuck my vacuum cleaner nozzle over it and you can hear the little fan whizzing around in there. you can also hear it spinning when ignition is on so that's working OK. Cleared the code - no flashing. Drove the car for a bit and the flashing came back. I'm stil not 100% sure the climate is actually working. Given it's pretty cold out at the moment it's hard to determine. I can nick an infra red thermometer from work actually - does anyone know at what temp it should be blowing given a known ambient? I'm sure I found a PDF of a graph for this somewhere but I can't remember where. Thanks for the help so far :)
  14. Ford garage came good in the end. Number is 1201566 Price is a bit ouch though
  15. Hello, Can anyone help me out. 2003 2.3 petrol Galaxy I've tried ringing ford and asking for a price for the cruise control vac pump but they just draw a blank and can't find it. I've since found this link that mentions it as being called a "speed control vaccum pump" but they are still none the wiser. http://ford.workshop-manuals.com/Galaxy_2000.75_04.2000-02.2006/index.php?id=747 Can anyone tell me how the hell I get a part number and therefore a price for one of these elusive beasties? I don't have the car in my posession at the moment so can't remove the pump myself to check. Thanks
  16. Thanks for that. Something else to check, nice one.
  17. Minor update. Car is back at the supplying dealer who's had it for 3.5 days now. Spoke yesterday and he said his autoelectrician was having a bit of a nightmare as the cruise control is a vacuum system rather than pure elctronic....Yes, I knew that from 10minutes googling, muppet. I already found the usual near side wing pipe to the vac pump has disintegrated, replacing that with a bit of random rubber pipe didn't fix it so the fault must lie in the pipework elswhere, the pump, ECU or pedal switches..or all of the above. Lets see if he can get it working anyway. At least he's leant me a car in the mean time. Other things to fix are a sticky starter motor and the headlight level motors have seized....once they are sorted I'll have a 100% working car. I like everything to work, even if you don't need it to!!
  18. Just found this page http://www.gerritspeek.nl/vag-com_dtc-01086.html Under possible symptoms is "Cruise Control Doesn't Work" - mine doesn't work! The dealer said his electrician has ordered in a replacement sensor after having a look at it last week. I wonder if that will stop the flashing. Anyway, We shall see....best bet is to hand it back and let someone else pull their hair out I think. I'll update with what happens anyway.
  19. Hello, Bought a 2003 2.3 Manual Ghia Galaxy from a dealer last week, 92k miles, full history, new tyres, discs and pads all round and the car is cosmetically near perfect in and out; very pleased with it so far but it came with a few known issues that the dealer has agreed to fix for me. The main problems were the air con not appearing to blow cold and cruise control not functioning. On inspecting the car I noticed the climate unit was flashing, did a quick google and found this is due to a fault code stored in the unit and like due to a loss of pressure in the system. I was sure to get the dealer to put in writing that it would be fixed, same with the cruise. On collection I checked and it did seem to be blowing pretty cold, trouble it it's less than 7deg C out at the moment so it's hard to tell. There was a noticeable air con smell though and you can hear the compressor kicking in/out when pressing econ/auto. Anyway I read the codes using VCDS-Lite and the following error message was/is stored in the climatronic unit:- VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.2Wednesday, 13 November 2013, 17:15:17.Control Module Part Number: 7M5 907 040 L Component and/or Version: CLIMATRONIC MPV GP 0005 Software Coding: 00010 Work Shop Code: WSC 00020 VCID: 3905AEE730411 Fault Found:01086 - Speedometer Sensor (G22) 35-00 - - Cleared the code and the unit no longer flashes until you turn the car off/on run it for a bit and then the flash returns. So, the question is, rather than the air con having lost it's coolant is it sensible to say there is indeed a faulty speedo sensor that feeds data to the climate unit (I've read something about it could be using it to take into account wind chill factor?). If it was a low pressure fault would this come up as a more explicit error message saying as such? For info the clocks are all working perfectly. It's going back to the dealer later in the week for the cruise sorting so I'll not worry about that just yet and assume he can sort it. Other than the cd changer and the analogue clock not working (both sourced cheap off ebay) I'm really happy with the car. Absolutely brilliant for what it's designed to do i.e. tranport 3+ kids and 2 adults in supreme comfort. Thanks in advance for any replies. Oh and if anyone in Leeds wants their codes reading with VCDS-Lite I'm happy to do it for a virtual (or real!) beer.
