isnt broke soon will be

speedo and fuel gauge cut out, with warning and alarm to refuel (tank has sufficient fuel). all other electrics work and car performs as normal. Been told I need to replace the dashboard but that seems a bit excessive. Anyone had similar problems and can advise how it was fixed?
