Sorry, I dont understand this comment, is it not possible to kill some one without speeding? Speeding is only a factor in a minority of accidents (dont take my word for it, look at the available data) despite what the publicity campaign would have you believe. Excessive speed for the conditions may cause an accident, but excessive speed and speeding are not the same thing.

Help! Auto Box Slipping
Grumpy replied to Barlidge's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
It seems a fairly common fault with 2001 1.9TDi Autos, the gearbox is Japanese and unfortunatly quite expensive Mine started slipping last year (in 4th and 5th) and the box had to be rebuilt (fortunatly mostly covered by warranty), the quote had come in at -

Where Is Best To Sell Your Car
Grumpy replied to golfmadman's topic in General Discussion and Nonsense
I sold my Xantia on ebay, it fetched far more than I was expecting, no one asked any technical questions about it, no one came to view it (and therefore no test drives). It worked for me -
Bad luck bigdaddy Mine failed last Thursday I had forgotten about it so as it was a rush to get it booked in I didnt get much of a chance to look over it. Repairs cost

I love the auto (until it goes wrong of course!) As has already been said, an auto will probably use more fuel and it will cost more to tax. But when you are in a traffic jam on the M25 (yes they do happen sometimes!!) in a manual, you would sell your kids to be in an auto. I find my driving style much more relaxed when driving the Gal, my other car is a manual so I constantly switch between the 2. My first choise would be auto although having said that I do tend to worry when pulling my caravan with it.

Warranty Direct
Grumpy replied to Ian in Northampton's topic in Dealer Service and Reliability (Galaxy)
My policy stated it does cover air-con. I believe it depends on the level you purchase -
There should be 1 sensor on the front and 1 on the back, I cant remember which side these are on. As has been mentioned before, if the pads are OK then start to suspect the instrument panel, when these are faulty they can flag up incorrect warnings. When I bought my car the dealer had hidden the instrument panel fault by adjusting the bonnet closing switch so it didnt switch when the bonnet was closed, this showed up as the indicators didnt flash when I locked the car. When I adjusted teh switch the brake pad warning showed up! Thanks to members of this site, I was alerted to the problem after around 6 months of owning the car, my fight with the dealer to get it resolved is somewhere on this site.

Warranty Direct
Grumpy replied to Ian in Northampton's topic in Dealer Service and Reliability (Galaxy)
I have a policy with Warranty Direct. Last year they picked up most of the cost for fixing my auto box. If you take out a policy, watch out for the 90 day wear & tear exclusion. If you have an existing warranty then the 90 day exclusion should be waived, it says so when you get an internet quote but they may put up a fight if you do claim within the first 90 days. -
Letter To Ford Uk Md - Read Before You Buy New Galaxy
Grumpy replied to hp4020's topic in MKIII Technical section
The best result I ever had with a car problem came after contacting www.honestjohn.co.uk as well as the website, he has a letter section in the Saturday Telegraph. After writing to him about a problem I was having with Warranty Direct, he immediatly got involved and the problem was soon sorted and my auto box was fixed under warranty. -
Glad to hear you are enjoying your caravanning. Surprised to hear that the Scenic is such a good tow car, I had been told it was a bit lightweight for towing. We used to have a 99 1.6 petrol but bought a diesel Xantia for caravan pulling duties. Now the Galaxy has taken over that duty.

How To Double The Fuel Economy Of Your Galaxy
Grumpy replied to johnswlondon's topic in Debating forum
I have never got 60mpg, but on a journey from Dartford to Horley (about 36 miles) with the cruise set to 50 on the motorway, the trip computer recond on 55mpg (door to door) -
As NikpV said, mine was a faulty dash. But you need to check all your pads as I understand that only 1 pad at each end of the carl has a sensor, if you have a sticking calliper then one pad will wear out first. My warning came on again some time after the dash was replaced but this time (after 2 trips to the garage) it turns out it was one of the rear pads at fault. There is nothing more annoying than that beeeeeeeep followed by a warning symbol.

Cruise Scare! Suggestions Please.
Grumpy replied to neiluk's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Mine works from just over 20 too. Also another way to change the set speed is to pull back the resume slider and hold it there for a couple of seconds, it then re-sets to current speed I use mine in unfamiliar built up areas at 30 so I dont have to be on the lookout for Gatsos whilst I am trying to find my way around. Mind you the sat-nav covers both these tasks too. -
Cruise Scare! Suggestions Please.
Grumpy replied to neiluk's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Sounds scary and not a little odd. The brake pedal shouldnt be affected by the cc at all, the application of the brakes operate a switch (brake light switch?) which dissengage the cc. If you have a very heavy pedal then this would suggest a brake problem or a servo problem. I guess it is possible that the cc is affecting the servo if it is leaking the vaccume away. The cc on my car has a push button on the end of the stalk, this temporarily disengages the cc allowing the car to slow but then resumes cc at the speed the car is going when you release it. There is also a sliding switch, sliding it towards the center of the steering wheel switches the cc off and sliding it the other way resumes or accelerates the car. -
The cruise disengages when you touch the brakes (and the clutch in a manual I think). You always have to manually re-engage it. New modern systems (on posh cars!) will allow the car to match the speed of the one in front (up to the set speed) so you shouldnt have to dis-engage it.
-
The resume switch also allows you to increase speed if you slide it out and hold it there, if this is working then I would guess that the switch is OK
-
To resume mine I have to briefly move (flick really) the switch on the stalk away from the wheel, this works as long as you are going more than 20MPH (or thereabouts)
-
Hope the car gets fixed soon so you can get to enjoy your new toy. Buy yourself a cheep portable BBQ and keep it in the van. We cook on ours most nights (and some lunchtimes). If you are feeling posh then a gas one hooked up to the vans supply would be good.

Or buy a trailer board for around

I tow with my auto (approx 1200kg caravan) and it does make life easy but I am always concerned wether or not I am harming it. I had to have the auto box repaired end of last year but I cant say wether or not the caravan could have caused the failure as there does seem to be a regular occurence of auto box failure on this car. The garage that fixed the box said that there was an aluminium drum containing the clutches for 4th and 5th and that this had cracked (a common fault apparently) the replacement part is steel. I have heard that the box is on the limit for the diesel and thats why only the 115hp version is auto, having said that if the box can take the torque from the engine then the only difference whilst towing is that it is transmitting the max torque more often, the engine wont produce more torque whilst towing.
