It's now just staying in 3rd the whole time... Is the fault code reader a separate item??

I'm having trouble with the 5-speed auto gearbox in my Galaxy. When I start up and begin driving it's fine, but then it drops into 3rd and stays there. Once the engine warms up to temp, as long as I stop then restart the car, everything is ok apart from a minor jump when it goes into 3rd gear. On the odd occasion, it seems to decide that even when up to temp, and no matter how many times you stop and restart it's remains resolutely in 3rd! Any ideas?? I figured that the fact it goes into 3rd gear is some sort of 'safe' mode, and wondered whether it was a sensor that was causing the problem... Cheers Stevie
