when i brought my 1999 2.3 auto it had a abs sensor fault . this did not effect gearbox for me no limp mode so dont think thats your problem beleive you have more than 1 sensor on your gear box will see what your fault code throws up when i get home

check that your blades are not coked up in your turbo common fault on diesels

have you checked the boots on the cv joints usually the ones opposite to the way you are turning that will grind

if your anywhere near enfield will be able to run scan on it for you and see what fault comes up
