Hi Guys, does the 1.8tdci galaxy have a coolant level sensor, if so where is it? I've a head gasket issue and am surprised that the car is not telling me that the coolant is low when it is quite happy to do so for the washer bottle. I have a suspicion that if there is one the previous owner bypassed it to hide the head gasket issue. Thanks. Torq

Hi Guys, my wife is toying with the idea of replacing her 06 Renault Grand Espace with a 07 Galaxy with all the bells and whistles. I've been running my 02 Seat Alhambra Stylance for the past 5ish years and still love it even after it's timing belt tensioner failure disaster. I'm used to vagcom/ECDS for the Alhambra but what is the equivalent for the mk3 Galaxy? Is there more available than just the codes generated by the dash diagnostics? Thanks Torq

Yep I swapped the injectors over and the loom to go with them. I logged onto a VAG forum (pretended I had a Sharan as the vw forum was far more active than the Seat one!) ran a few tests using Vag caom and posted the results there. A site sponsor (who does remaps) read the data I supplied and thought my accelerator pedal potentiometer though going to 100% wasn't demanding enough fuel. I got a replacement from my local breakers fitted it and now she's fueling much better and seems to have the performance back. I did the rocker adjustment today and I think she's back to the way she was now performance wise. But I don't know about the MPG I have a feeling that there's still something up there and it might be the cam timing though I set it correctly or else the cam sensor is slightly out of position or even the trigger ring on the camshaft pulley may be slightly off. Vag com does show an imbalance with the injectors and it looks like no2 could be over fueling. My neighbour has exactly the same Alhambra as mine, a sport stylance, and once he's back from holidays I'm going to run a few diagnostics on his car and compare to mine. I'm nearly there!

Hi Guys, following on from my catastrophic timing belt tensioner issue. I replaced the head, cleaned out the ERG valve and did the turbo seals. Now I'm down on power and the run that would normally give me 48MPG is now returning 28mpg! Even the slightest incline causes mpg to drop and in 1st gear I've seen it as low as 7mpg! The figures are correct going by a fill to empty/mileage calculation. I ran diagnostics today and there were no engine faults so it must be a mechanical issue. It's possible the cam timing is slightly off and I didn't reset the injector rockers. It is boosting as I can feel the intercooler outlet pipe expand when you give it some revs. I ran without an air filter and that has no affect so it's not an air restriction. All vacuum pipes are connected and I'm at a loss. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. Torq

Unfortunately the only pic I took was of the trashed head which I will post another day. But I have a few tips. The bolt at the back right of the cam cover is a nightmare to get off with the egr bits and pieces in the way. I haven't bothered refitting it after. Don't make work for your self trying to strip the inlet and exhaust manifolds off before taking the head off, do it all in one go Remove the metal panel and plastic one directly above the engine it will give you the space you need. Don't try to lift the reassembled head with manifolds and turbo back in by yourself. I did but being realistic it's too heavy. Mark the diesel pipes, don't mix them up. Everything went well in the reassembly, the car started once I got the diesel pipes the right way around. But I have an issue (sigh) I'm going to open a new thread on it. -

Well the Alhambra is back on the road about 2 weeks now and all is going well so far. The only silver lining to this was that it forced me to drive my 95 bmw convertible for the best summer we've had in years! It did look a bit odd with 3 child seats but the kids loved it. No room for the wife though! -

Head is off and If I was a bingo player I'd be shouting "House!" as every valve is bent. But oddly enough there's not a mark on any of the pistons so I'll be throwing on a 2/h head and hoping for the best. -

Just a bit of an update. So I decided to throw a timing belt on and see what would happen. And the answer was... nothing! While the crank would turn to some degree the cam would only give around 10deg of rotation. So I whipped off the cam cover, the injector rockers and the cam. Every valve is damaged! None are at fully closed, they all appear to be partially open so I'm assuming bent. The cam lobes are damaged as are all the hydraulic followers, one or two show signs of the valve stem trying to break through the top. So one sheared stud worth about 50c has cost me the top end of the engine and most likely battered the pistons. It's now looking like a second hand engine is the only option. -

My apologies, it was the stud that failed it's actually threaded into the head and not the block. Anyway it sheared about 5mm out of the head so I should be able to get it out, the tensioner also made contact with the cam pulley damaging it and the hydraulic tensioner also broke so 2 more parts to be replaced. The kit I fitted 25k miles ago came with a new stud so I replaced it. I've since met someone who bores out the hole to take an M10 stud instead of the standard M8. Funny thing is that when it happened there was no bang, just a loss of power, I thought the injection system had packed in and was able to drive her to the hard shoulder so it could be just slipped timing. I guess a leakdown test would be the best bet before getting the spanners out. Thanks for the advice on head removal if the worst comes to the worst! -
Hi Guys, The bolt in the center of my 02 Alhambra's timing belt tensioner decided to let go at 75mph on the outside lane of the motorway causing a loss of power and a trip home on the back of a tow truck. Luckily there was only one other car around, the one I was about to pass, and no one got hurt. I'm assuming that there is valve damage so the head has to come off before I rebuild her so has anyone any tips on how to tackle the inlet and exhaust pipes buried at the back of the engine so I can get the head off. TIA. Torq. P.S The belt kit, including the bolt had only 25k on them before failure.

Improved Polish Intermediate Driveshaft Set

There are a few threads on those driveshafts on this forum. I fitted one about 3 weeks ago and it has made a massive difference to my clonky pickup and gear change! When fitting, don't use all the grease or you won't get the shaft in as it will hydraulic lock. Lastly, it's not a remanufactured part, it's new but redesigned for longer spline length. -
As the car heats up any moisture will become airborne and condense on the colder windows. Go for a long drive with the heat up full, at the first sign of fogging open the rear popout windows and the front passenger window by about 1/2inch. The air flow should push all the moist air out the rear wiindows. Took 40miles to dry mine out but she's dry as a bone now. T

Dual Zone Climatronic. Can't Turn Of Heater Fan!

It does but even removing the switch and unplugging it doesn't make the fan stop. The only things that do are removing the relay for the rear demister, pulling out the aircon fuse or removing the climatronic control panel. I think it's the control panel at fault but have no way of proving it. T -
Moral of the story. Don't leave your car sitting for 4 months with a flat battery! I am unable to turn off the heater fan, as soon as I turn on the ignition on she comes and on she stays till I switch her off! Adjusting the fan speed makes no difference, just keeps on blasting out air. I think the problem may be related to the heated windscreen as again, as soon as I turn on the ignition the switch lights up, it stays lit for a while, goes out but the fan keeps running. Finally, the outside temp on the dash is still just a row of dashes, I've even throw in a new battery as the old one died yesterday. T P.S. Anyone know how to get the diagnostics to display on the dual zone climatronic?

Hi Guys, my 02 Alhambra had been sitting up for a few months while I got around to replacing the inner drive shaft (the motomax one from poland)and siezed alternator pulley but I now have her back on the road. I've a small but annoying problem now due, I think, to the lay up. On the digital dash the outside temperature is displaying as a line of -- --- but on the climate control is it showing correctly. Any ideas? Thanks. T

Hi Guys, I've ended up with a full tank of 75% diesel 25% petrol in my tdi due to the petrol station getting a delivery of petrol into their diesel tank. Is there a drain plug on the bottom of the tank or is it a siphon out job? Thanks. Torq And before you ask... I did 40 miles before discovering the problem and the petrol station are going to sort it out.

Hi Guys, my inner drive shaft is well worn! There is around 10deg of slack which gives a great "clunk" during quick gearchanges, which I don't do anymore!! I do mainly motorway driving so don't change gear that often and until I get a replacement, either 2/hand or from Poland, I'm considering welding the worn bits together insitu as a bodge to keep me going and when replacement time comes, get the angle grinder out for disassembly. Anyone any good reason why I shouldn't do this? TIA Torq

Sorry for the late reply. Unfortunately I was unable to open the pulley. It's a slightly different design to the 4 rib type and I couldn't risk breaking it on a sunday evening when I needed the car for work on the monday morning. I'll get one from a breakers some time and have a go with it as I'm sure that with a bit of thought I'll be able to free one up. Torq

I've had a mystery colant loss for the past two months, 2L every 400miles. Found it last week though. The main hose from the head to the bottom of the rad was not in it's clip at the bottom of the rad. This caused the hose to rub off one of the air con pipes which has worn a groove and a pin hole in the hose, that's where the water was leaking from. New hose from a vw dealer was

No tow bar but no plastic filler either, just steel. My Alhambra has the factory sports suspension so I think it's very slightly lower than standard. Finally, the apron is a bit damaged so it's not a good bet for fitting the sensors. Torq
