I know this is bringing back a dead thread, but I've got a problem with spongy brakes, and I was wondering if it could be air in the ABS system, as all four callipers have been well bled. If I don;t have access to VAG-COM, is there a way to 'manually' bleed the ABS block?

I suffered a similar spate of failures - IIRC I went through about four sets across about 15k miles :D I was tearing my hair out (metaphorically! I've too little left to waste on actually tearing it out!!). Anyway, it turned out the car had a worn steering arm ball-joint. Not detectable by me despite much shaking and pulling of the suspension, but it failed the MoT on it. I got it replaced, and the drop links have been fine ever since. Could be worth a check...

I know this is a bit of an old thread, but I've always missed the "miles to empty" function on my Mk2 Gal (2003). Anyway, I've just had a new Alhambra as a hire car and that HAS got the miles to empty function. So is this something that is a difference between the makes or was it an unspecified update? If the latter, is there anyway to upgrade the trip computer on my 2003 to give the function?

My wife has just phoned (before I had a chance to look here) and she'd been in to Purbeck Ford (next door to the children's school) and they suggested looking for the chip - sure enough she found it and now the key works fine. Thanks to MM and NV :D

If I wasn't so p!ssed off, this would be funny... My wife just went out to try the spare key... The blipper locks and and unlocks the car (I assume this means the fob is correctly "programmed" into the car. If I use the key on the blipper to try and start the car, no joy as per my post above. If I use the NON-blipper "spare" key, car starts and runs with no problems. How can that be? How does the car "know" which key is being used to turn the ignition switch? :D :D

52 reg (Jan 2002) 1.9 TDi auto Galaxy Ghia Problems with my wife's Gal: turn key to start the car, stop for a moment to allow the glow plug light to go out, then on the start position. Nothing happens. Turn key back and try again, the engine runs for a couple of seconds if the key is held on the starter. Then dies. Consistenly, turn to start -nothing; back and try again, runs for 1-2 secs on starter then dies. I've tried moving the gear selector to/from P - N, no change. Have the brake light switch out (4pin version) [what a Bar Steward job that is :D] and cleaned and returned. Tried (successfully as far as I can tell) "reprogramming" the remote key. Now at a loss what to try next :D Nothing obvious...HELP NOW, my wife has just told me that my 4yo daughter managed to pull the key fob apart. I'm guessing as I've since reprogrammed the system this shouldn't be an issue. Any thoughts, please?!? If not, I'll have to call out Britiana Rescue tomorrow morning :D

It's amazing how abbreviations can be misinterpreted either by accident or for comic effect :) Anyway, looking at another thread (topic=6235), I see someone has fitted 275/55/17 which gives a diameter of ~29", which is pretty much the same as a 215/70/16. So, I reckon some ex Land Rover or Discovery tyres might work pretty well. Come on, someone shoot me down. It can't be this easy, can it? :D

I've heard this many times before and it was certinly the cause of failure on my Volvo AC. The rubber o rings and seals need to be regularly lubricated (by the oil within the system) or they fail and obviously the refridgent leaks out. Some of the recharge kits you can buy contain a "sealant" and others claim to "recondition" the o rings. I've no idea if they really work, or if it is all marketing hyperbole :blink:

Any hint where on the TIS I'd find the pattern for the beam deflector? Thanks :)

Gal Mk2 2003 auto climate control Of the three centre air vents, the driver's side "flap" has broken. Is there any easy way to remove the vent to be able to repair or replace the flap mechnism? I've looked on the TIS cd and the one page I could find seemed to indicate a fairly major strip down of the dash :)
