  1. Mine also smelt very rich, hence why it failed it's MOT due to sky high emmisions. Once the new coil pack was fitted it ran better than ever, better MPG, more pull and passed the emmisions with flying colours. I will hunt through my phone as the guy I bought the coil pack from dismantles a lot of Shalaxy's.
  2. I had the same issue a couple of weeks ago. I started by replaceing the cheepest option, plugs. No different. Then changed the leads and that made a slight difference. I then tried the drying the coil pack in the oven trick but that made no difference so I ended up biting the bullet and buying a coil pack. I was fortunate to find a guy not too far from me with one on ebay, and with the help of a plee in an email I manged to pursuade the guy to end the auction early if I went straight over with cash. We fitted it there and then, and the minuite I fired the old Gal up I kne we'd found the cure!! One thing I did notice through all that, was my splash guard (back of the engine bay) was missing, and when I removed the back three leads they were corroded quite badly. and again when I gave her a clean this weekend I noticed that afterwards, water was dripping from the bottom of the screen, straight into the back three pots, which again caused a slight cough until the water had gone. Hope that helps.
  3. Seeing as no-one has got back to me I'm guessing no-one else has suffered this. The car was also suffering a slight misfire in low revs (below 3k) when under load. So have today changed all 6 plugs and HT leads, and although this has improved things, hasn't completely cured the misfire. My coil pack is baking nicley in the oven as we speak, so all being well in the morning it may well be cured. If not, is anyone local to Oxford that has a spare coil pack I could try before rushing out and buying one? I'm guessing that the misfire could well be connected to the high emmisions as the MOT guy did say that it was smelling of unburt fuel a little and that that could lead to the high readings.
  4. Hi, sorry if this has been covered before, but I'm in a bit of a state. Had my 2.8 Gal in for MOT this morning and it's fail on emmisions. It's not long since had a lamber sensor fitted and the tester did say that lamber readings were fine. What could the causes be? Any help would be great as I need her taxed and tested for friday. Thanks
  5. Did think about the diesel, however my boss is on his third galaxy and he's owned a 1.9tdi, 2.3 and now a 2.8 and he tells me that he would go for the v6 everytime. He used his diesel for towing, with 6 people on board, and even the slightest wiff of an incline caused the gal to almost stop. It's a 96 on a N. Engine wise it's fine, slight misfire when damp (coil pack on its way out) but the main issues with it are the failing electrical bits. Back in the summer (if we can call it that) during the heavy rain, water got inside the car which killed the locking ecu under the passenger seat. At the same time the water also killed my drivers leccy window and the passenger side is also tempramental. Other things include a leaky sunroof which also has ceased to work and front suspension knocking which I know nearly all of us have suffered. My main reason for not wanting to solve these issues is that car is worth very little now and it seems a bit pointless throwing money on a car that has covered over 170K now and to be honest has served me and my tribe very well these last 4 years.
  6. I currently have a mk 1 vr6 galaxy that is starting to fall to pieces. I am looking at getting a mk2 galaxy and have seen both a v6 and 2.3, does anyone have any opinions as to which is better? bearing in mind i will be towing a caravan and occasionally a trailer with a mgzr on board. Also, both mk2's I have seen don't have a towbar, ill the towbar off my mk1 fit? When I finally take the plunge and get the new car, I will be breaking the mk1 for spares. Thanks in advance Alastair
  7. I've got the door card off, and have tried forcing the glass back up, can get it to move about an inch, then goes no further. Will try by-passing the switch tomorrow, but as I mentioned before, when shorting the switch to try and make it go up, all I can hear is a relay type click coming from the motor.
  8. anybody??? i'm not too happy not driving the car seeing as i cant shut the window! lol
  9. Have tried the global, and that now operates the passenger window only. The central locking ecu is slowly coming back to life, although not totally perfect, I can at least lock and unlock the car. Is there any way to manually close the drivers window? anything similar to the way you cn do the sunroof if the switch fails? I've been playing with the switch, and I can hear a type of click noise when you try and open or shut the windows, so am guessing that the motor is caput!!!
  10. I put it in the iring cupboard over night, and also checked the circuit board. Looked a little fuzz with dried water etc. Gave it a bit of clean and re-fitted. Car will now un-lock, but not lock, passenger window is almost back to normal, but still nothing from drivers window at all. Have even tried shorting the window switch to try and operate it that way. ?????????????????
  11. Hi, Yes have just taken it out tonight and put it in the airing cupboard to try and dry it out.
  12. Hi, this may have been covered before, but i thought i'd start it anyway. After all the heavy rain over the weekend, my car has developed a mind of its own. Firstly, went out to the car to find it was unlocked and both front electric windows open. Car wouldn't lock and windows wouldn't shut, either by switch or global open/close. Looked under passenger seat to find a big pool of water!! got rid of water and tried my best to dry out under the seat. Since then, car still wont lock with the key, drivers window wont shut at all, passenger window will shut with switch, but when it reaches the top it re-opens half way. If you try and global close the windows, the passenger window shuts fine. However, when you turn the car off, remove keys and open the drivers door, the passenger window opens!! Seems like the car has a mind of its own!! lol Any ideas?????????? Thanks in advance
  13. My Gal (96 VR6) has the same issue with the airbag light. I was told (by a friend and VW Technician) that it came on because I once jump started a mates car off the Gal, and did something wrong (pos lead before neg, or vise versa) which has caused this fault. Is this still the same Clock spring problem or something else? I do know that airbags need checking after 10 years or so, and my Gal comes into that age bracket.

  15. My 96 Gal V6 is in desperate need of a service. so seeing as we've got an extended weekend, I'm going to go for it. I've got the oil and filter, and went to my local motor factors to get some ingnition leads. He quoted me 120 quid for the set!!! Rang Halfords, gave reg of vehicle and they confirmed make model etc (I had to check as I've got a private plate) and for a set of leads, they quoted me 30 quid. What is the difference, are Halfords leads that bad in quality? Also, Halfords don't list the plugs for the V6 Gal!!! Thanks
