Can anyone help me sort out why I can't PM a moderator or admin? Permissions perhaps? Nik or Mumof4? John Sorry for starting a topic for this, but I've tried all which way to get in touch...

Cam Belt Tensioner Snapped - Help!

OK, nice to see the forum back up again! :) Repairs are underway this week with some less than confident but competant mechanics. 5 valves (1 inlet, and 4 exhaust), 4 lifters, 1 Hydraulic tensioner, 1 stage 3 head gasket, 1 timing belt kit, 1 water pump. Total cost on parts so far, £320 ish inc. a tow to garage of £30. Labour yet to be added. So far we also noticed hat the turbo fan has horizontal and vertical play.... We'll try to ignore that for now  but a puzzeling fact is that the exposed pistons turn slightly clockwise ?!?!? Never noticed this before on any motor. They turn a few mm, anyone know why? That makes the job that little bit iffy as we can't fathom why this is the case. Nonetheless we are going for it and we'll see if it starts and runs without smoking sometime this week. If not, new engine £800 ish or cut my losses and sell for parts. Either way I'm a few grand out of pocket. :( ROY202. Not warranty, back street job, freind of a freind... plus I cant go finger pointing as his missus is our childminder...so lip biting extreme!! -

Cam Belt Tensioner Snapped - Help!
Jaddi01 replied to Jaddi01's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Possible, but I think it's more probable that the guy who did the timing after the gasket change didn't fit the retaining nut correctly. From day 1 after the repair power transfer was intermittent so it was probably losening even then. I'm yet to confront this guy about the entire situation, but don't expect to get anywhere. -

Nobody out there with any suggestions? Anyone had this done before, if so how much did it cost? -
This is a plea for help form anyone in the North East area. I could really do with some advice on a decent mechanic who knows his/her way around a PD engine. Here's a short run down of the problem I have. Bought the Galaxy (1.9TDI PD '00) about 8 months back. Needed work, such as arms, aux heater plug and recon., secondary water pump, wheel carrier, etc etc. All of which I did bit by bit when I had the time. So, all well, I thought lets take the wife and kids to Germany to visit some old friends. Drove to Dover from Durham at a steady 60mph... all good. Got into train all good. Got off train and sped up to around 80mph..all NOT good. Temp shot up to 130C. Needless to say the next 10+ hours getting to Berlin was S L O W. Had it looked at in Berlin at a cost of around

Galaxy 1.9 Tdi Overheating/boiling Up
Jaddi01 replied to groover1973's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Well, got mine sorted too. All the above symptoms. Turned out to be the head gasket. Once replaced all is well. Now on to the other problems.... -

Sorry to bring up an old thread but anyone got the part number of the gasket set? It's almost readable in the pic, but not quite! Ta John

Just a few quick ones. I've been reading the posts here about retro fitting the travel computer on MKII Galaxys. What I'd like to know is: 1) When you change the instrument panel to the "med" or "high" and have the proper stalk, is it just a case of plugging the stalk into the existing wiring (and then activating using VAG Com), or do you have to do additional wiring? 2) Instrument panels from VAG are programmable only once when new. Is there any way that using a second hand unit that the milieage can be transferred? I'm guessing not due to the implications this has, but thought I'd ask anyway. 3) What about the outside temperature sensor? I mean, I won't have one if my car did not have the computer fitted as standard (or will I ??). How easy is it to fit one of these? Thanks in advance John

Hello guys and gals! I wanted to change 4 faulty sensors on my MKII 00 Galaxy 1.9TDI. (sorry no pics in this one, but I'll try to be very descriptive :)) After reading how to check, remove and refit I thought I'd have a go. However.... it seems that the far front right and far front left sensor cables are too short for just the bumper inserts to be removed to change the sensors. After looking into this, it seems the front bumper must be removed and then the sensors fitted from behind. Well, I thought this was madness. So I became creative! So, I managed to get some replacement sensors and also an old sensor cable loom (front or back, makes no difference). I removed the old sensors and cut them on the bend on the "L" shape with a hack saw at 90 degrees. This reveals the 4 connectors on the inside (the ones that enter through the plug). Next, saw away (or file) the plastic between the connectors to reveal 4 shiny connectors. Now what you should have is a standard plug (the one that goes on the loom) with 4 revealed prongs at the other end. So, now you need to cut the plugs and wiring from the used loom. You can probably see where I'm going with this by now... Where you've snipped the plug and cable from the old loom, you'll now need to solder the wires to the 4 shiny prongs you exposed on the old sensor. I did this with a bit of plastic shielding too, but I suppose you could use masking tape or something similar to stop any unwanted short circuits. Make sure the wires going to the prongs match where they go to on the plug. All you're really doing here is extending the cables... Once done, I sealed the wires with PVA rubber to make it water-tight.. But silicone will do the same job. Now you'll have a plug with wires leading to another plug. Basically an extension cable for your loom on the Galaxy. Should be about 15 - 20 cm long depending on how much cable you cut from the old loom. Now repeat this and you'll have 2 super cool extensions. Remove the bumper inserts holding the sensors (I guess you would have already done this to get the faulty sensors out). Then insert your new extensions in the far right and far left. Attach new sensors and re-fit insert. DONE! And the best thing is, next time a sensor goes it'll only take 30 seconds to replace and no need to remove the front bumper.... Hope this helps someone out there... John

Vag-com & Things You Can Do With It!
Jaddi01 replied to GSMGuy's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hi Mike I hope you are still monitoring this thread! I was wondering about fitting the stalk. Am I right in thinking that if I bought a used stalk with computer controls, this would fit into the existing wiring or would the wiring also need to be changed? I've yet to find a dash replacement too. Anyone know how to transfer the old mileage over to the new set of clocks? thanks
