How do I tell which type of engine? It's a petrol 2.3 varaint

Can any one recommend a cheap diagnostic tester for a 2001 Galaxy, I have been looking through e-bay and want to understand if there is one suitable before making a purchase. I have a problem with the engine warning light flashing and reading the post it could be a failed coil module.

I recently purchase a 2001 Galaxy and it's only used for weekends but the battery has gone flat twice within two weeks. To help could anyone answer the following questions: 1. The display in the cluster never goes off, I am sure when I purchase the vehicle the cluster display would switch off after 10 or 30 minutes. Could any one confirm does the display remain on constantly or should switch off after a period of time. 2. Mounted in the engine there what looks like a motor with two black hoses one runs into the back of the dash and the other hose into & under the engine. This component is mounted mid way in the engine bay just under the windscreen. I have heard this motor running constantly even when the engine has been switched off even after for several hours. Could any one help me understand what is this part? Many thanks for your help & answers in advanced.
