  1. I too have a 2001 zetec, but the 2,3 petrol model. I had the same prob a few weeks ago. Also the AC and aux heating had stopped working and the direction control on the heater. Infact the whole panel was dead apart from the fan switch. An earlier topic on this forum said that the lads on the back of the controlpanel work loose. A flat bladed scrwedriver behind the panel facia removed the facia. then 4 tork screws got the panel out. The leads did not apper to be loose, but lo and behold, I took them of, put them on again and now all is working fine. I also did not have to remove the radio as ws suggested by a previous member. It may be as simple as that
  2. Help. Has anyone out there had similar problems. I have a 2001 2.3i petrol. About once every month it would fail to start...not even turn over. However, before I had a chance to get annoyed or anything, I would replace the key in the ignition and ...bingo, off i'd go. Suddenly this weekend, it got a lot less intermittant and a lot more reluctant to start. I have two keys. one remote one and one non remote. I noticed that when using the non remote key (ie My one, us men always end up with the one that doesn't do the fancy remote thing), it won't start and the immobilser light on the door flashes. If I then put in my partner's remote key, the same occurs. If however, I then wait for about 1 min, it will start OK with the remote key. I am therefore suspecting the chip in the non remote key has failed somehow, and the immobilser waits about 1 minute before accepting any instruction from any key. Does anyone else think my diagnosis is correct? Has anyone else had immobilser problems? or is it actually nothing to do with the keys and is actually relay 30 on the blink. I'm not quite sure how to proceed. I guess the next few days with the one good remote key will tell all, but any pointers or advise would be grateful. many thanks Midherts galaxy. 2.3i petrol 2001
  3. Sounds just like the problems I had (1 march). just thought I'd let you know, I received my cheque from Tesco this morning. Full Re imbursment of parts and labour for my new Oxygen Sensor and also for the cost of the tank full of petrol that I had used up. RESULT
  4. Ford say it is the Lambda Sensor. They think it was going anyway but I think it's too much of a coincidence. Am I really the only galaxy owner affected.
  5. All of a sudden the news is full of the story about defective petrol in the South east. Having read yesterdays topic on the subject, it seems to suggest that Galaxy's are unaffected. I beg to differ. My Galaxy went in to Fords yesterday for a service, but also because it was running very rough. I had filled up with Tesco's fuel on Both the 13th Feb and last Sunday (Feb 25th). The mechanic there was stumped and muttered something about the inlet manifold melting and the air valve not closing properly. I shall get on to him first thing in the morning and mention this fuel thing, but in the meantime, is there anyone out there in Galaxy-land (in particular, South East Galaxy-land) who is having the same problem? Do Galaxies have Lambda sensors that get clogged up, or has mine actually got something else wrong with it I await replies with interest and will keep you posted about what Fords think it is tomorrow Cheers Midhertsgalaxy
  6. Had to get to post #94 to find someone with the same story as I had. Spent yesterday fixing my part seized linkage. Despite assurances that it wasn't to difficult, I didn't have an easy time. Here are one or two things i found out on the way: 1) the shrouds behind the wiperarms just lift off. They don't seem to be attached in any way. I spent some time with a mirror trying to find the hidden bolt. 2) in order to remove the scuttle tray I had to loosen the expansion tank and push it down 3) The wire loom to the motor was hard to remove. Harder still was a plastic cable trough along which the loom passes. This is attached to the mechanism by way of a plastic sleeve over a metal tab. It would not budge and I had to cut the tape securing the loom into the duct and leave the duct on the mechanism arm. Only when I had removed the mechanism did I find that this duct was held in place by a plastic release tab on the UNDERSIDE of the sleeve...Ie where it cant be seen. 4) To get the mechanism out I had to remove the air filter cover (3 screws aroung its edge) and disconnect the large air inlet hose (2 bolts and PULL) and push this out of the way. I also had to disconnect the expansion tank temperature sensor (which has a short lead) and push the expansion tank out of the way. Only then did the mechanism come out of the car - 3 hours The drivers side spindle came out after about 30 mins hitting with a hammer. The passenger side moved about 2 cm in an hours hitting but then wouldn't budge. As the car had to be used later in the day, I ended up cleaning and greasing what I could and then hitting the spindle back into the shaft. Thankfully it was still turning. I shall keep it well oiled with WD 40 in situ and see how it goes. My advise - for what its worth - it if - like mine, the wipers had only slowed, and not siezed, get the wiper blade off, remove the c clip, washer and O ring and get that WD 40 down there. Thats what I shall be doing every few months this winter Thanks for all the advise. I found this thread was SO helpful yesterday and I'm very smug in the thought of the
  7. don't think it was flooded because it still wouldn't start on sunday evening, some 6 hours after it first failed  No flashing door LED at the time of failure, but will also investigate keys. Problems occured on Sunday when using my partner's remote key. I have the Non remote key (stingey ford only supply one remote key) - lo and behold, car starts - could be a key problem I have just read a topic on the squealing starter motor/aux belt. Sounds just like my symptoms. Off to check Thanks
  8. I have read lots of topics about poor starting and learned alot about relay 30. Does my Galaxy - (2.3 Mk2) have a relay 30. It has had very occaisional starting problems. Three times in the last two years it hasn't even turned over, but instead much flashing of dashboard lights and clicking of relays. In anger and frustration I have walked away, phoned the AA and then returned to the car, at which point, luck a sulky child who has been given a sweet, it started perfectly. Then last Sunday, only 5 days after a Ford 50,000 mile service, it behaved diffently. This time it turned over but would not fire. The fuel pump was working and there was a strong smell of petrol. No amount of walking away and locking/unlocking the doors helped and for 2 days it sulked. It must going through teens. Guess what. this morning, despite a virtually flat battery, it started first time. I was about to get it towed to a Fraud garage. Now its going, i don't know what to do. I don't want Fraud to put it on their computer and diagnose something expensive unless the car is actually not starting. I guess I shall invest in AA Homestart and wait for the next failure. Anyone out there experienced similar probems? Midherts Galaxy PS does anyone else have a whirring, grinding sound from the starter motor immeadiatly after the engine fires?
  9. I have a 2001 galaxy 2.3 petrol, and recently overfilled the washer bottle. No great problem, but there was no room for any "anti freezing" solution. Thus, you've guessed it, one freezing night later, and the bottle has obviously frozen, cracked and its contents are now dripping over the drive I have looked under the bonnet and can only see the top of the bottle. it looks well buried under the battery. In the absence of a Haynes Manual or a cheap local garage, has anyone attempted to replace a washer bottle and have you got any advice for a part time DIY er Thanks Mid Herts galaxy
  10. I have had My Manual 2.3 Mk2 Galaxy for 18 months now and 4 times it has failed to even turn over. Instead the battery has sounded very weak and ALL the warning lights have flashed at random, accompanied by much relay clicking. The last time was with a car full of children, so I got out ot phone the AA. I got back in and...hey presto it started. So could be an immobilser problem connected with the drivers door (I had not got out since previously stopping the engine...everyone else has...does this sound daft theory) The other thing is, when i start normally, there is often a whirring cog sound straight after the engine fires. It sounds like a starter motor dis-engaging, but I thought dis-engaging starter motors went out with the Ark. If it is this then I guess the occaisional starting problem listed above could be a jamming started motor. Has anyone out there in Galaxy land had a similar problem. A brief trawl of the forum revealed lots of starting problems with an auto, but this is a manual Thanks Midhertsgalaxy
