Thanks to everyone for your help - I am convinced it is the booster heater now I know I have one!

My 1.9 diesel galaxy(06reg) makes a whining noise just after I start it. This continues quite loudly until the engine warms up to 90degrees, then stops. I can't get it to do it again until the next day - it really has to be cold to do it, but would have stopped by the time I get to the dealer in order for them to listen to it! any ideas - still under guarantee until end of month so if expensive would like to get it done but no idea what it can be.
