  1. After much head scatching and time wasted, finally found out that the calliper will retract so far on its screw thread but then needs to have a push at the same time to allow it to continue down all the way. Its as though the screw thread that it winds back on starts to turn with you after a certain point ,and you have to put presure on it to stop this action, then the piston will continue to screw down into the calliper. Might not happen to everyone but its worth a go if you find yourself in the same situation.
  2. pads need changing on my 98 tdi galaxy, turned caliper back ok with bleed screw slack, but the gap is still not enough to cover the new pads? Still turns but does not collase into the casting anymore? Any ideas or measurement for the maximum gap that it should be possible to obtain. Had to put old pads back in for now.
  3. 1998 TDi 90 bhp
  4. My 90 Tdi has just passed 100k and when accelerating hard a cloud of black smoke can be seen in the mirror, performance seems unaffected and mpg is also fine, is it normal at this mileage or are there any quick checks I can do myself, before I have to go to a specialist?
  5. Checked wire and pulled also in each direction but unfortunately it was ok, there was no 12v on the wire, hence my thoughts about the relay but as I said the layout was not as per diagram.
  6. Have no rear washer or wiper, pump does not run (cant hear it) and wiper dead. checked wires in tailgate sleeve and seem ok, went to lok for relay but niether the handbook layout or description from similar threads matches the layout that I have on the rear of the fusebox. All fuses check ok is it going to be the switch itself? 1998 1.9 tdi
  7. I started using Mobil 1 because when I first got the Galaxy I could not find the VW500 refrence on the filler cap on any oil except Mobil 1. After that I just stuck with it but it is the only 0/40W I have seen.
  8. I use Mobil1 its a bit pricey but I wait for Halfords to do a promotion on oil, and it is often 25% off all types, so I get 2 x 4ltr at the same time. Do all the maintenance myself.
  9. If its your MAF thats gone and it seems the most likely check out Ebay there is one for sale for around
  10. I have changed the fuel filter as per the service schedule 3 times but can honestley say that I drained the filter each time and found no water at all. I dont think its a problem, but you can do it easily yourself. The filter is visable to the right of the engine cover and is held in place by a plastic clamp.unscrew the clamp to allow a bit of movement and the scew (large plastic knob) is on the bottom of the canister you can let it drain into a plastic cap from an aerosol or similar. If you have trouble you can always take the fiter off the in and out pipes are only held in place by spring clips.
  11. Having followed the threads on power loss from this site I found the MAF sensor had gone chips on my galaxy, I went to a Bosch dealer as you suggested and got one "Off the shelf" cost
