  1. Its A 58 plated 2.2 which goes like stink. But the stink is the problem as the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) recycling burn off kicks in so frequently and when it does it produces clouds of burning oil smoke from under the bonnet and the smell gets inside the car - as the wife said the other day - "Im not going to miss this one when it goes back" - which is this week thankfully. This is our 3rd Galaxy (V plate 2.3, 52 plate 2.3 and this one 2.2 Diesel) and number 4 arrives this week but this time I'm going back to good old 2.0 gasoline variety and I won't be buying another Derv variety. You can tell when the DFP recycle is running as the fuel consumption rises whilst stationary from 0.1 gals per hour when its off upto 0.4 gals per hour when its on. The clouds of burning oil smoke billowing from under the bonnet even more noticable at night with the lights nicely illuminating the haze. Ive even had people alongside pointing at the front of the car - I guess they are worried it's going to catch fire! The stench of oil smoke also gives it away even Why does the DFP recycle need to com on when I have just driven 120 miles in approaching 2 hours on the M4 and M5 ? Reliability has also been a big issue with this one - its the first car has actually broken down without any warning and left us at the side of a pitch black motorway since I had a Rover in the early 1990's. Anyone else having similar smokey DPF recycling events with the 2.2?
  2. Its normal ! i have had a 58 2.2 tdci from new for 30 months and 40,000 miles. What you describe is the engine burning off all the soot - AKA Deisel particulate recycling. In my 2.2 58 plate it stinks and the smell is like that from oil leaking onto a hot manifold. The smoke can be so noticable that it has had pedestrians poiting at the smoke coming from under the bonnet. With my 2.2 it happens daily at some point sometines more than once, usually having stopped after a couple of miles run - especially if you've aksed it to press on a bit. The fans come on to dissapate the heat generated I have heard the some cars which didnt have the fans activate used to melt tarmac - note that the instant fuel consumption will increase from about 0.1 gal per hour to around 0.4 gal per hour during the cycle. The engine malfunction light used to be a regular occurance after the recycle process but was resolved by a engine software update some time ago. The 2.2 is great when it is going well - unfortunately for me that hasn't been all the time and I have had many problems with the ECU, turbo hose splits and worst of all the air con.

  4. Job done ! Thanks for all your help, the most difficult thing was finding a T45 bit to undo the 4 bolts. I put the bolts back in so I can't lose them ! The seat came out with out any drama, and also enabled me to clean up the glass remnants from when the passenger window was smashed. Apart from the lump in the middle and the small hole in the carpet the 6 seat 2+2+2 seating arrangement is much more like what I actually need. Incidentally even though the seat is much thinner than prevois tumbling models it weighed a surprising 40lbs. - Only 2 lbs lighter than my previous seats on my 52 plate. 2.2 tdci 2+2+2 seating, gypsy traveller option pack, 18 y spokes, sports suspension, 235/45 ZR18 conti's, pan roof, sun blinds and roof bars.
  5. Thanks for your help and swap offer Richard! The seats aren't joined together and the two seat buckles are integral to the seats - what I really want to know is if unscrewing the seats will leave 4 fixing nuts / locking plates on the floor under the car or worse still rattling around under the floor trim , which would of course make the re-installation of the seat impossible (for me). It looks a really simple operation but I suspect it may end in tears.
  6. I have a 2.2 TDCi on a 58 plate and am becoming increasingly frustrated with the middle seat- i don't need it and it is getting in the way. Before this I had a 2 other Galaxys and a Grand Voyager and loved the way you could walk down the middle of the car to get to the rear row. My question is this - can I safely remove the middle second row seats and take it out of the car completely or is this something that I really shouldn't be contemplating. The only problem I think may occur is if there are bolts under the floor. I know I'll need a special star patterned key to remove it but that shouldn't be too hard to source. This is my 3rd Galaxy now and I must say that I preferred the 42lb removable seats as the fold flat system eats up too much of the cabin space, it isn't a flat load area like the earlier models and you cant get into the back row as easily as you could before when I had a 2+2+2 seating setup. Also taking all 5 out reduced the cars weight by 15 stones of dead weight if you didn't need them. Love the car, and have now covered 10,000 at 34 mpg overall. I love the torque of the 2.2 (motorway acceleration from 60mph up is very impressive) but the whole seating set up is spoiling the experience for me. Is what I am proposing a good idea or could this be seen as interfering with the structure and/or modifying the car by the insurance company? Bring back the removable seats I say. Thanks Spheroids
