  1. May be worth having a quick look at the wiring running through the rubber gaiters between door & body, it's well known for the wires to break which can cause all sorts of puzzling electrical antics with doors, windows etc. When I checked mine recently (window opening buttons not working, elec windows opening on their own when car locked etc) I found several broken wires in every door gaiter + the tailgate gaiter. I'm just amazed that most things were still working! Look in the FAQs pinned at the top of this forum for info on how to check the wiring & how to mend it if broken. Will only take 10 mins per door to have a look, before you get into the painful business of pulling the door apart.
  2. Despite the niggles, it's still one of the best cars I've ever owned!
  3. Just like Steve (above) I was idly looking through posts on here and came across this thread. Went out & checked my Galaxy & saw a deformed lid on the fuse box  - opened it up and the whole fuse/connector from the alternator looks very rusty & warped so I assume I have the same problem ;) . The fusebox - look at the connector at the top Taken from further away in case anyone is as dim as me and not sure where to find this fusebox - passenger side of engine bay is at the bottom of the picture, front of car to left, battery to right, engine block above. This is a 2.3V6 MkII Ghia, not sure if the diesel models have it in the same place. (apologies for poor quality - it was my phone camera!) As this box is hidden under the battery cover it's not something you see very often and if I hadn't been looking for signs of warping I might never have noticed. We had an electrical nightmare with this Galaxy a few years back where it would be driving along happily then just completely lose all power & acceleration, then slow down & stop. Sometimes you'd be able to restart it but eventually we had to get the AA out to bring us home. It went into my local trusted garage who had to get an auto electrician on the case and he replaced various bits, including the alternator, until it worked. Cost me a LOT (this was before I knew about this forum or the story might have been very different!). I wonder if it was all linked to this fuse box or if the failure back then is what caused the fuse box to end up like this. Anyway, I'll be replacing the box and the alternator cable ASAP because I don't want that to ever happen again.
  4. Thanks to this forum I've managed to fix a couple of annoying - but obviously widespread - problems on my MkII Galaxy Ghia: Weird door locking/unlocking & elec window opening issues - found broken wires in every door gaiter, fixed them and now it all works beautifully Rear screen washer - found disconnected pipe in passenger footwell Still got a few niggles to deal with, hopefully searching here will give me clues to those too: Cruise control stopped working a few years back - will have a look for a perished vac pipe as suggested One front washer is just dribbling - blocked or failed? I've never seen screen washers with their own individual water & elec supply before! Anyway, just thought I'd register my appreciation for all the folks who've taken the time to offer such great free advice. Extra special thanks are due to the chap who made a full guide with colour photos on how to check out the wiring in your door gaiters! If I ever solve a Galaxy problem which hasn't been solved on here before (unlikely, I know), maybe I can give something back.
  5. Thanks all for the info, my rear wiper's been playing up so I had a look at the wiring between the body and the tailgate and sure enough some of the insulation was worn away. Luckily none of the wires had broken so I've used some electrical tape to seal them all up again. Now I just have to fix the rear washer!
  6. I worked for Royal Mail Parcels as a temp one Xmas and part of our job involved sorting sacks of parcels into international regions. It went like this: Sorters stand in the middle of big room next to piles of sacks full of parcels A semi-circle of 6-ft tall cages is arranged about 10 ft away Sorters decide which cage the parcel belongs in and throw it in - from 10ft away, over a 6ft cage wall! Stuff like china and bottles of whisky etc stood no chance, regardless of the packing. I was pretty horrified, especially as most of it was presents from people in the UK going to their overseas relatives. Since then I've always parcelled things up really carefully  This was back in the late 1980s so maybe things have improved since then...
  7. I have a problem with my 2001 Galaxy (2.3 Ghia Petrol, Manual) that sounds similar. If you try to put the engine under reasonably heavy load at low revs (around 1.5-2k RPM) by accelerating or towing a load, it very often gives one or two "jerks", as if the engine were skipping a beat. This has happened for a number of years but has become more frequent & noticeable lately. In the "good old days" before electronic engine management (back when I had no money and used to fix car problems myself  ) I'd have guessed this was a fuel supply problem e.g. dirty fuel or partially blocked carb jets etc., but with ECUs god only knows what's going on. I could pay a garage several hundred quid to investigate & come up with some vague possibilities but I was hoping someone else might have a good idea what might be causing this.
  8. I have a 2000 Galaxy 2.3 Ghia. At its first MOT the other day the tester issued an advise on the brake servo unit. He said it was building up back pressure when the ignition was turned off. Normally this would be a fail but having checked with his "professional testing body" (or something) he was advised that it was a known issue with the Galaxy and the Chrysler Voyager and couldn't be failed on that problem. That was good news because the replacement servo unit alone would have been about
