This sounds like something is curropting the CAN bus signal in the electrics which will do this sort of thing have you had anything fitted to it recently like bluetooth or parking sensors? these can cause this if the electircian has connect the power to the wrong wire. if not then i would suggest disconnecting the battery for 30 mins to an hour then see what happens.

Hey Gregors i do drive one as a company car if that helps ive got a 2.0 TDCi MkIII Ghia. are you sure its White smoke? White smoke is the engine burning water i.e the head gasket maybe? if it has a blue tinge to it it will be burning oil and black smoke is unburnt fuel so i would get someone to do a head gasket check on it first but white smoke is burning water. How old is the gal? what Mk?
