  1. (The gear box is a 6 speed manual by the way) Can't turn the radio up!, since they did the gear box, they had to disconect the battery and the radio code I have is not the correct one, so no radio !! :) (but thats another story!) Sparky Paul, some good info there, thanks....Most of it I can pretty much rule out with all the work and checks Ive done but the bit about the half shaft bearing has got me thinking! I did unbolt it recently and spun it as best I could while it was still on the car and it felt smooth, but how about I remove the bolts or slacken them, and take it for a run, see if it changes the noise. I'll give it a go. I used to have a Scorpio 2.0 L so I know all about turning the radio up,.... To cover all the noises it was never turned off in that car :D Thanks guys
  2. I've just done another test. Switched the engine off whilst cruising down hill,so no engine, clutch in, out of gear! still the noise persists,The only things moving are the wheels, half shafts, differential gears and bearings.anyone heard of the main diff gears wearing out and sounding like this? ( car has done 163k ) :)
  3. Hello again. Just changed the wheels over front to back with no difference in the noise so I dont think the tyres are involved, anyone go with the engine mounts idea? or DMF ? :)
  4. Thanks guys. As I mentioned in the post ,I have had new front wheel bearings fitted so its not those. The tyre idea is a possible althought I have not long had my second set of exactly the same tyres recently fitted, but it did not make the noise with the first set. Also the noise only started slowly and got worse with the new tyres.think I will try swopping the front and rear over though just to see if the noise changes! let you know if it works, but keep the possiblities coming in chaps..nice one. Neil
  5. Dont know why this post duplicated, cannot seem to remove one! sorry.
  6. So does mine Saif, but when the outside temp falls below 6 or 5 degrees, only the aircon light comes on,not the aircon! thats how it fooled me. :)
  7. Not sure who may be right here, but I do know when mine does work, I set it to warm and fast fan.. and no more mist ! don't know if it works when set high to hot, never found it necessary! thanks chaps :o
  8. Thanks for all the input guys,as a general consensus, it seems I'd best leave it alone so as not to bust it altogether! It is a little infuriating though with a car full of people and they are all irritatingly wiping the windows with the back of their hands, just makes me think, its supposed to be the 21st century and where no further ahead in demisting than my 1970s ford Cortina!! never mind ;)
  9. VW Spec appears not to be quite so specific! A/C should switch off when ambient temperatures are below approximately 5*c. Thanks Mirez,.do you know any way of making it operate below this temp or is that it? cheers
  10. Thanks for the help guys, and yes it is for the drying effect of the aircon not the cooling side of it,but still need some more stats on the actual operation of the system because i do not want to bugger it up altogether trying to make it work below 6C! ;) any more info very welcome cheers!..
  11. Apparently the air con will not operate below 6 degrees C, I have found this mentioned somewhere on the site. first thing, Is this correct? if so, is there a good reason for this? my partners Toyota AC works no matter what the external temp. Driving the car in cold conditions is very difficult with no air con to clear the windows, it steams up like a Turkish bath!. The standard venting is woefully inadequate in a car this size, just leaves me with a small hole through the condensation near the mirrors. If there is an outside temp sensor that cuts off the air con operation at 6 degrees, can it be disconnected? if so would this be detrimental in any way? Hope someone can help as winter is on its way again! Thanks..Neil ;)
  12. Dont know if this will help, but during an unrelated job on my 1.9 tdi,I forgot to replace the air inlet pipe (the one with the MAF in it) The next day I drove to work,20 mins into journey lost power as described 50mph and would not do 70mph totally limping to work!. got there and discovered my mistake, refitted said pipe, restarted and all was well.maybe any leaks of air into the system could upset the output readings from the MAF. Not sure if this helps,
  13. Hi, Anyone know the rough cost of having the front strutts and springs replaced on a 2001 1.9 tdi by a garage? all those rusted top nuts and dangerous spring commpressors are out of my league! cheers.
  14. I too Have had aircon problems since getting my galaxy a year ago.the front upper pipe had snapped off and the bottom pipe leaked. Both replaced at a cost of
