Hi, hear is a good one. Started with the steering juddering when turning wheel at standstill. I thought it might have been low power steering fluid, but no. I thought it might have been the alternator belt slipping so I steam cleaned around that area as there is a small oil leak somewhere and I thought it might have contaminated the belt......and the problem went. Now I parked up the car yesterday and in the space of 4 hours the battery went flat so we bump started it and it ran but the abs lights were on and the battery light stayed on. I had a new spare battery so I changed it and it then started fine but the battery charge light stayed on. This morning the new battery is flat too. I did not leave on any lights or the radio. Any ideas........ Have checked the small fuse box in front of the battery and thats ok. Thanks Ian

Yup, the Mk1 models shut down after 3 failed attempts but dont lock out so turning off the ignition will reset it. Mk2 models unfortunately lock out after a number of failed attempts and have to be reset via diagnostics, vagcom or whatever. Thats progress for you. Thanks to you both for your help. Hi. The aux heater is not working on my 54 plate mk2. I have changed the glowplug and its still not working. Do I need to reset the heater with a VAG com or is there another way? Thanks in advance.

Hi Gregers. Now you mention it I have not heard the heater run on like it used to. Perhaps that could be the problem. Does it help to heat the engine as well? I think I read elsewhere that it has a glow plug to ignite the heater, is this failure a common problem and is it easy to change the plug? Many thanks.

Hi I have an ongoing problem with my 1.9 td galaxy mk2. The original problem was the engine took a long time to warm up, if I drove for a few miles then turned off the engine for a minute and then continued driving it would then quickly attain the right temp. It was as if the stat was faulty. I have changed it and it now seems to take the same long period to warm up but if i,m coasting down a long descent (we live in the alps) the temp drops back down and the heater cools. Having changed the stat i,m now at a loss as what to do next. Is there a particular way to bleed air from the sytem? and does the stat have to sit in a certain orientation in its housing i.e. 2 oclock, 3 oclock (its in the right way). Thanks.

Many many thanks to Lttledaz. I had the same problem plus the fact I live in france I was thinking "merde" this will cost me dear but have now fixed it by changing that fuse 33. Perhaps we should call you Bigdaz instead!
